"This Sesshomaru's word is final." Kakashi heard a deep voice resonate behind Rin's door and paused in confusion. He didn't mean to eavesdrop, but…
"And so is mine, my lord." Came Rin's response. Kakashi's brow furrowed in confusion. Who could his teammate be calling 'my lord'?
"This Sesshomaru placed you in this village for your protection, my ward, not to fight in some war you have no part in." The growling voice continued.
"I have no choice!" Rin protested.
"Then I will remove you from this village if it no longer serves its purpose."
There was a beat of silence and Kakashi strained his ears to see if he was missing anything, but then…
"No."
"Excuse me?" The male voice asked, clearly not used to being disobeyed.
"Sesshomaru…" Rin began.
"You dare call me-?!"
"Dad!" Rin shouted, and once again there was stunned silence. Kakashi could hear her swallow with his chakra enhanced hearing and suddenly he felt he shouldn't be there. She never spoke of her family or past, he realized. Not even when he'd told her the truth about his father at Obito's funeral. And he was so stupidly self centered, he'd never asked.
"Father…" Rin said. "That's what you are to me, you know. You raised me. And, and I love you for it, you know that, right? I love you like a father. But you can't always protect me. You have your lands to the west, a war of your own to fight, and subjects who will not respect your decision to care for a human. I cannot with a clean conscience continue to be your burden."
"Do not concern yourself with my wellbeing."
"I cannot do that. My love for you prevents it. But I also hold love for this village. And as I would protect you with my life, my lord, my precious father, so would I sacrifice myself for this village."
"Rin." Sesshomaru stated. "You have grown."
Rin chuckled. "I love you too… dad. But you need to go now. My teammate is coming any minute to pick me up for a mission. I'm actually surprised he isn't here yet."
"Goodbye then... my love. Be safe."
It was the last words Sesshomaru ever spoke to her.
Impaled on Kakashi's arm, Rin gave her last teammate a bloody smile as his chidori fizzled out. "He gave this life to me, and now I will give it back in order to save my precious village" were her last words before she died.

I had actually planned this to be a story about Sesshomaru taking vengeance on Kakashi for Rin's death, but that didn't happen.
