A/N: I've always wanted to write something about Sesshoumaru as I find him too interesting to pass up the chance. Consider this a prologue to a possible upcoming story. It will consist of shorter chapters because I find it too difficult to keep up with a schedule for longer chapters AND my Uni. *sigh*

Disclaimer: Inuyasha belongs to Rumiko Takahashi.

Prologue

"How much further?"

No answer.

"Can you smell anything yet?"

A sigh was all she got.

"Do you expect me to read your mind? Cause I have a great view of your head from back here and I'm currently in the process of burning a hole in it."

"Hn."

An answer, that's a progress.

It was Kagome's turn to sigh. What a day. She was worried, tired, hungry, a little lonely, but most of all – bored. Walking was all they did since morning and the end of the day was still in the far off distance. She readjusted the straps of her backpack and looked around the never changing scenery that passed them by. They were in the middle of a forest. Where exactly, she had no idea. She has lost her sense of orientation somewhere on the way. They might have been walking around in circles the whole day for all she knew.

She looked back at her companion that led the way. His long shiny hair was softly swishing from side to side with each step he took, eerily making almost no sound at all with his movement. The fluffy thing he always carried over his shoulder would lift towards her with the wind, from time to time, and she was determined to grab it and pull hard were he to refuse stopping for the night later that day.

"Aren't you hungry?" she tried again.

And failed.

"No? Really? You're not feeling even a wee bit peckish?" she patted her stomach for emphasis, which went unnoticed by every living creature in the vicinity.

"No? Cause I'm starving. And I'm aware that my puny human body is a huge bother and all but mom always told me to never do anything important on an empty stomach and, I mean, this is important, right? I need the energy that comes with proper nourishment. That's how we humans survive. We're like plants, you see? We need water and nutriment to grow and help the world by producing oxygen. Well, technically, we don't produce it, we use it to survive, but the plants do…"

Sesshoumaru stopped in his tracks and looked over his shoulder at the miko who fell silent with the sudden halt. He levelled a warning look at her. "I'm beginning to feel the burning hole now."

Kagome blinked several times, surprised by the sudden sound of his voice. But what she was even more surprised about… did Sesshoumaru actually crack a joke at her expense?

He was already several paces further away from her when she finally recovered from the slight shock and she hurried to keep up with him. A smile spread over her features. The day might just end up better than how it started.

A/N: Let me know if you liked it. After all, readers are the ultimate driving force.

Take care,
