The months following proved to be difficult for Charles and Lucie. As Little Lucie was growing, her parents always were worrying if the dark ways of the revolution would have a toll on their daughter. But besides that, Charles was still uncertain of the way his life was getting put back together. He did not fully understand why Carton had sacrificed himself for their family, but he did find a note in the pocket of the jacket that he was wearing when regained consciousness. On the note was inscribed in a shaky handwriting The love I have found is stronger than life itself and I see her love and am unwilling to ruin that for her. Charles did not want to show Lucie this note, as it would break her heart.
Hiding the note from everyone proved to be too hard on his mind and his heart, and on this night, the five year anniversary of his reuniting with Lucie, he decided it was for the best. He had secretly spoken of this to dear Mr. Lorry, who most regrettably, had died and this was Mr. Lorry had advised. Calling Lucie into their farthest backroom after Little Lucie had fallen asleep, he explained that he had been keeping a secret from her. Gazing deeply into her eyes, he removed the tattered note from his left pocket and pressed it into the palm of her hand.
After a few silent minutes had passed, Lucie looked up and whispered a small thank you to him. She kissed his lips and as she pulled back, he could see her eyes were swelled up with tears. He comforted his dear wife by telling her that she deserved to know. She only could shake her head to inform him that she believed what he did was right before she burst into tears. The happiness that was always in her eyes was glimmering faintly in a time of so much sorrow. She was filled with such a joy and sadness at the same time, she did not know what emotion to express.
Lucie mustered enough strength to walk away. All that she wanted to do was to be alone and think. She never fully understood why Carton could be so selfless. She knew that he cared for her family dearly, but never to such an extent. All she wanted was to be able to say something to the man who had changed her life and saved it. She knew exactly what it was and even though she was unable to tell him it, she would still try.
Looking up to heaven where she knew he was, she began to pray. "Dearest Carton, you have saved me. I never knew that a seemingly ordinary man could save a girl. Not only have you saved me and Darnay, you have saved the hope in my heart. What you have done has not only restored my view of life, also that you must always hold on. You must believe always and forever because there is a savior. You are my guardian angel. As you are looking down on me right now, I hope that you think it was all worth it. I will never ever forget you and when we are reunited in a time and place in the distant future, you will be the one I will run to. I love you and although no two words can truly express how I feel, thank you. I am eternally grateful".
