Chapter 1: The Three Hundredth meter

"Izu… IZU WAKE UP!" Mina said shaking her bestie awake.

"Wah? Let me… sleep" said shifting to a more comfortable position in his sleeping bag but mina was having none of it.

"No! we have post duty at the 300th metre remember? Now get up or they will dock our pay!" mina said as she pouted poking izuku in the nose.

"I-i forgot that was today…" the boy said quickly grabbing a quilted shirt next to his area and some extremely worn out pants. He noticed minas similar garb but she had a small revolver attached to her side and a large smile, clearly already fully prepared for duty.

"Where's mom by the way?" Izuku said while fumbling through his backpack for his weapon.

"Mama inkos at the soybean farm harvesting today, now grab your bastard and meet me outside izu!" Mina said referring to izuku's small machine gun before eagerly exiting their tent but izuku had a question.

"H-hey why are you so eager to get there by the way? Aside from the docked pay i mean" The boy said grabbing out a small submachine gun from his backpack and slinging it around his shoulder.

"A hero recruiter is spending time with us" Mina said excited leading izuku out of the tent and into the weak light of the community campfire and the red emergency lights of the station.

"W-what! Why would they be recruiting here? There's barely a five thousand people here and more than half of them are soybean and rice farmers!"

"I dont know!"

"Maybe they are trying to get Haru?" izuku said referring the former underground employee.

"No Haru would never leave this place, too much of a chicken shit" Mina said casually and izuku quickly went in to shush her.

"Stop swearing! Its against the rules and we'll both have to pay for it out here!" Izuku begged with a look of desperation on his face.

"Oof sorry.." Mina said with a guilty smile as she walked with izuku. Mina had already violated this rule before and several others, all because they needed to be more polite in speaking with one another.

Their station and many others hated the growing rudeness of the new generation and their station needed a new way to punish them for their rude behavior, so they established the "Politeness acts' and anyone who offended them would pay via a single military grade cartridge. Mina already lost a full magazines worth of money for her swearing alone.

Leaving the weak campfire and into the dim light of the marketplace with a merchants just beginning to set up their wares for sale with few actually ready for trading.

"Hey lad look here" Said a smaller filthy man with a long white beard holding out a what looked like a cheap souvenir samurai sword "Look at this, its authentic see?

It could cut any mutant right in half! Only 10 cartridges" he said almost pushing it in izuku's hands.

"No thanks sir" Izuku said politely while pushing the sword back to the man, the man grumbled but did nothing as the green haired boy tried to keep up with his pink haired friend.

"MILK HERE GET YOUR FINE MILK HERE" and "FRESH FRUITS! FRESH FROM HOSU STATION JUST GOT OFF THE TRAIN"

were some of the things offered by merchants to the young pink and green pair, a shame they were far too expensive.

When the pair finally got out of the market they began heading towards probably the most dangerous job in the entire metro, three hundredth metre guard duty.

Mina was clearly excited about it but izuku was visibly trembling at the thought of having to go at the edge of civilization and stay there for eight hours, but mina noticed this and being his good friend she tried to comfort him.

"Ya know it won't be too bad, we ARE the second line of defense" She said and it helped slightly because Izuku knew it to be true, the station sent scouts out for the day and they usually gave the telltale sign that an attack was coming and they usually handled it themselves.

Though still the lingering nervousness remained in izuku as they approached their destination… the three hundredth.

1 hour into guard duty

Izuku hasn't calmed down yet, and for good reason, their third partner hadn't shown up yet and the darkness was getting to him, even mina was getting slightly antsy having taken out her revolver and gently cradled it in her hand as she cursed the man for not showing up to his required duty.

The two had remained fairly silent, trying not to miss a single scuttling rat or possible suspicious footsteps and they both were ready to unload into the darkness to disperse it.

"I-i umm" Mina tried to speak while reaching for her bag, with a small smile on izuku's face as she tried to form words.

"I got an apple" Mina finally said holding out the small green fruit to izuku's complete.

"W-WHAT?! HOW DID YOU GET THAT WE DIDN'T EVEN BUY ANYTHING AT THE MARKET!?" Izuku almost screamed in excitement at the precious treat mina held in her hands as she began giggling at izuku's excitement.

"I take one half and you take the other kay? She said ignoring izuku's question entirely before cutting the apple in half with her knife.

"That… that didn't answer my question" he said slightly concerned as mina quickly handed him his half, which in all reality he couldn't refuse- it was too much of a delicacy.

So he began eating, it was delicious beyond believe. His usual meal of rice mush, soybeans and multivitamins couldn't compare to the sweet crunch of the apple. While he was slow enjoying every bite mina was devouring the core already.

"Save the seeds mina! Maybe we could get the station to plant some, i mean we DO have green rooms that could support it" Izuku said proud of his idea but mina gave him a guilty look.

"Uhh izu… i didn't exactly get this… honestly" she said in a slow and slightly nervous voice. Izuku stopped eating the apple and looked to mina and asked a serious question.

"Did you steal it?" Mina had been asked this many times in the past and she admittingly did lie a fair number of times, mostly for selfless deeds but still.

"I… borrowed it from…" She cut herself short as she became more nervous and blushed deeply.

"Who did you 'borrow' it from mina?" Izuku asked concerned at minas unusually nervous behaviour.

"Katsuki" Mina said under her breath and left izuku breathless as thoughts raced through his mind.

"He's going to get us killed isn't he?" Izuku thought remembering the stations strict thievery rules against the lower classes stealing food if he remembered correctly the list was something like this:

Soybeans were around 1-2 cartridges fine depending on the amount you steal, rice and potatoes were a fine upwards of 10 cartridges though failing might land you in jail for a few nights, rarer vegetables such as brussel sprouts and meats were serious fines costing you an entire magazine of military rounds and a full year of military service, but nothing compared to stealing dairy and fruits the rarest foods in the metro would likely be life imprisonment at a border colony were slave labour was used or in more extreme cases a death sentence would be carried out against people who stole these rare delicacy.

Izuku was shaking at the idea but tried to calm himself as much as possible. He and mina started to look towards the tunnel in a different way… an escape maybe? No! No one else saw what they were doing and if they ate the food and never spoke of it…

"Should we turn ourselves in?" Mina asked in a nervous tone.

"Lets just eat these and never mention them again, it's not worth getting killed over an apple" Izuku said, he never broke rules but in this case he couldn't not be considered guilty.

"Look Izu… i got this apple because..." mina began saying her face turning a deep purple as she tried to continue speaking.

"Did we… switch places or something? Why is she nervous one and why am i the calm one?" Izuku muttered to himself developing his own blush due to minas.

"Mina, look at me" Izuku said going over to his pink best friend and she complied looking him straight in the eyes with tears forming.

"We will be okay-" he wrapped his arms around his best friend, she yelped slightly but soon returned the hug fully sobbing on his shoulder "we just can't steal something like that again okay?" Mina lifted her face up tears in her eyes and began muttering something.

"M-mina i can't hear you"

"THE REASON WHY IS BECAUSE I-" she tried to yell out but distant gunfire drowned out what she said.
