Gift of Life

Wang Yao sighed heavily, taking a look out of the small window that kept him from the outside world. The words that the doctor told him rang through his ears. He didn't know what to make of them. They haunted him, and his eyes were heavy from lack of sleep. How could he sleep when he knew he wouldn't even make it to his 16th birthday? How could he relax knowing he would leave all that he grew to love behind?

He looked at the phone in his hands. The screen hadn't changed all morning. He knew that no one would contact him. He was alone, fighting a battle that many faced and few survived.

Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, his phone lit up. He quickly snatched it up from the bed and read the message.

"Hey"

That one word made a big smile spread across his face. He kept the smile as he typed his response.

"Hi! How are you?"

He lay on the bed, head resting on the pillow. He fought off sleep, in fear that he wouldn't wake up again. He counted the little stars on the ceiling, the ones that doctors told little kids to count so they wouldn't get scared by the needle. He counted them over and over, trying to see if he could see a million stars before he faded from this earth and became one of them.
