As Elphaba rose from the floor, taking Fiyero's hand in hers, she knew that the future was uncertain for them. Yet, she couldn't help feeling that as long as they had each other, they could take on the world.

Fiyero was in awe. This beautiful woman was all his. His Elphaba. He couldn't believe it. And even the price of being turned into a scarecrow seemed small in comparison to the fact that he got to spend the rest of his life with her.

Despite the feeling of failure that accompanied exiling themselves from Oz, Elphaba was more than happy to leave as long as she left with Fiyero. She never wanted to be parted from him again. She felt her childhood dreams of fairy tales and happy endings coming true, all because of him.

Fiyero could live forever, thanks to his Elphaba. He promised himself that he would love her for forever and a day and that he would spend that time making up for the years they had lost while she had been on the run and he had been a member of the Gale Force.

Elphaba had never believed in love. Her father avoided her whenever possible and she had grown up feeling obligated to caring for Nessa. The result—Elphaba neither giving nor receiving love. Now, however, she thought her heart would burst with love for Fiyero, her soulmate.

As Elphaba and Fiyero joined hands and looked over Oz for the last time, each was absorbed in their own thoughts. Elphaba thought of her failed good deeds, how she would miss Glinda and regret being unable to tell her that she was alive and well, and, most of all, how lucky she was to be able to spend the rest of her life with the wonderful person standing beside her and holding her hand in his. Fiyero's thoughts were of his parents, how he regretted hurting Glinda, but most of all, his thoughts were of Elphaba and how even though he was a scarecrow, and therefore unable to love her the way a proper man could, he did not regret the actions that led to his transformation into a scarecrow. As Fiyero led Elphaba through the archway that would take them away from Oz, he paused to place the pointy black hat that was her trademark on her head. They locked eyes and in that one look, both knew that whatever the future held for them, they would face it together and with the knowledge that their love for each other would last forever and always.
