PROLOGUE
Lyrixa sprinted through the city; trying not to run into anything as she escaped from the city cats who threatened to kill her. She cried with pain at her cheek that was swiftly cut open by Shard.
CHAPTER ONE
Lyrixa padded out of her den; carrying the plump mouse she had caught, her fur bristled in the cool wind of the border between the forest and the moors. She backed into her small home underneath the roots of a rotting tree she had found while running from the city.
Lyrixa shook her head at the memories, choking back tears.
She slowly chewed at the mouse, savoring every bite…
Lyrixa peered over the roots of the tree at something moving; black paws shifting in front of the tree, then some ginger and some white. She heard them murmur something about the tree. Lyrixa could only swallow a few words they were saying, "—just a legend," or "—true, not fake,"
The ginger paws unsheathed its claws and stepping on the white paws of (what sounded like) a tom, "You are both mousebrains, to believe in that sort of stuff!" it was definitely a she-cat; that's how Lyrixa's mother would talk if she and her brother, Red would stray out of her sight. The she-cat's voice had a hint of worry in them, as if something was wrong.
The toms had left and the she-cat sat down at the foot of the tree. "Pfft." she sneered, "It's not real!" she shook her head and padded away from the tree to go into a different den; a few sprints away from Lyrixa's.
What do they mean? Lyrixa thought to herself; the endless thoughts coming to her mind.
