Jenna Marshall was sitting at the dining room table doing homework when the doorbell rang. Tired of reading her history book – she was still having difficulty with Braille after a year of being blind – she stood up and started for the door.
As her hand touched the knob, a wave of dread washed over her. She paused, took a deep breath, and opened the door.
"Can I help you?"
"Hello, I'm Officer Lewis," and he showed his badge.
Jenna extended her hand and he paused before handing it to her once he realized couldn't see – the glasses was a big tip off. She gave it back after feeling the design.
"Toby's not here," she said defensively. She knew he didn't do anything to Emily – or Alison.
The cop was watching her, she could feel it.
"I know, miss. Are your parents home?"
"Why?" She crossed her arms.
"What's your name?"
"Jenna."
"Jenna, are your parents home?" he said more slowly as to not frighten the girl any further.
"What's going on? Where's Toby?" Why wasn't he answering? Why'd he need the adults? How'd he know Toby was gone? The dread intensified.
He stayed silent, and Jenna took a deep breath. "Mom?" she yelled, voice unsteady.
Footsteps came out of an office. "What is it, honey?" She reached the door and saw the uniform. "Can I help you, Officer?"
"Mrs. Cavanaugh, I'm sorry to say this, but there's been an accident."
"Where's Toby?" Jenna shouted in demand, holding on to the door frame.
Her mother, sensing the panic, pulled her to the side and stood in front of the officer. "Please just tell me what is going on. Is my stepson okay?"
"We found his motorcycle -"
"No!" Jenna cried out.
"Are you sure?" Mrs. Cavanaugh whispered.
"We have it. It's outside. If you could identify it -"
Jenna pushed past her mother and the officer; she nearly tripped over her feet.
Her mother immediately followed. The officer was faster and caught her first.
"No, let me go!" she struggled against him.
"You should go inside, miss," he said calmly.
"No! Let me see it!"
The man looked up at Mrs. Cavanaugh. She nodded and took her daughter's arm. Jenna immediately stopped fighting. The officer led them to the holding cart. Mrs. Cavanaugh's breath hitched at the sight of the completely wrecked bike. Her daughter reached out.
"No, Jenna, don't!" she tried to warn her off.
The young girl wouldn't listen and moved forward and let her fingers see the bike; make sure it really was his. She felt the wreckage, but she controlled herself and moved away.
"Why don't we go inside," the officer suggested.
Mrs. Cavanaugh nodded and led Jenna back toward the house. But when she took a step up the front stairs, everything just stopped and started. The calm was over. A sob made her heartbreak known, and she all but collapsed on the front steps.
Her mother tried to pull her up, but Jenna pulled away, seated herself down. And while her mother talked to the officer about Toby, her senses shut down. She sat and cried.
What would she do without him?
.end.
