Well, I just got kind of bored and haven't written anything other than "Reward" in a while, so I decided to do something else.
Matt checked the clock before turning off the nearby lamp and whispering a hasty, "G'night" to his roommate, Mello, sneaking his DS under the covers as he pulled the blankets over his body, over his head, too. Nobody would be able to see him, and would instead assume he was asleep.
It was nearly 11:30; Roger would soon check to ensure everyone was asleep, and he didn't want to get his new game confiscated yet again.
Matt started up his game under the covers, blinking as the bright light from the screen temporarily blinded him, invading the darkness of his makeshift fort. Engrossed in his game, he hardly registered a softly-spoken, "Good night, Matt…" shortly after.
He heard the sound of cloth moving, attributing it to Mello moving around in his bed, pulling his blankets over him. He could also hear him shifting around on his bed, but didn't think anything of it and went back to his game.
A while after he heard the door open and shut, nearly silently, as always, he decided to turn off his game for the night. He was itching to finish—he was so close—but the urge to sleep was threatening to overpower him, and he couldn't fight it much longer. Matt shut off the power and set his DS on the nightstand near his bed. He promised himself he'd finish it in the morning, before—or even during, he really didn't care—class.
Just as Matt was about to drift off to sleep, doing his best to clear his head and forget all thoughts of the game tempting him, he heard a quiet groan from Mello's side of the room. Matt couldn't deny his curiosity; Mello wasn't the type to talk in his sleep, or have nightmares, so it was unusual for him. And, hell, he'd always had a curious streak.
Slowly, he pulled his head out from under the covers, still facing the wall, instead of Mello's bed, hoping Mello wouldn't notice the movement—if he was awake, that is. He did his best to focus on the nearly-silent room, listening for any more sound. He really needed to learn how to control his curiosity…
All he heard for the following few minutes was a bit of movement—the bed creaked, and he heard the sound of Mello shifting the blankets around.
Still, the sounds were enough to keep his interest, so he kept listening to each noise, the urge to sleep gone. He heard Mello's breathing grow rapid, but it seemed like he was trying to hide it, to avoid letting out any sound.
Matt heard another soft groan, then a word that made his heart stop, made his blood run cold, as he heard it.
"Matt…"
Mello's breathing was still rapid.
Matt couldn't handle it anymore, the urge to look, to know. He rolled over on his other side to face Mello's bed, and peeked out from under the covers, hoping Mello wouldn't see him.
But Matt saw, in the darkness, that Mello faced him, and though he couldn't make it out in the dim light, regardless of how used to it he was by now, he was sure that the cold blue eyes stared back at him.
And he knew exactly what Mello had done.
This might continue, but if it does, I have no idea how. It doesn't feel complete to me, but…I don't know. Still, I like how it came out, even if I did write it kind of quickly…
