The 'Art is a Bang' Theory
Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto.
As a child, Deidara lived a fairly isolated existence. He lived with his mother in a little house on the outskirts of the Rock village and since his mother was more than a little overprotective, he was rarely allowed to venture into the village proper with or without her.
Deidara's mother was, in fact, the one who first introduced him to art - she was a potter, one of the best in Iwagakure and so he grew up surrounded by large masses of clay which she moulded into the most magnificent sculptures.
His mother sold her wares from their house, which was part of the reason that they rarely went into the village. On slow days, when she had a little free time, she would fashion a new toy or two for him out of any clay that was left over from already completed projects. Most days, however, she didn't have time to deal with him at all and so she would usually just pick up a lump of clay, drop it in front of him and then leave him to his own devices.
Having seen his mother do it a million times, the first thing Deidara did whenever faced with that formless lump of clay was to try to turn it into something - he usually tried to recreate whatever was closest to him - pots, cups, animals even.
However the idea to blow his art up didn't occur to him until one night when he was six years old...
BANG!
Deidara's eyes snapped open as the sound reached his ears. He remained stationary, checking to see if the ground was shaking but it wasn't and the sound didn't come again. He frowned and sat up, 'If it's not an earthquake, what is that noise?' he thought as he swung his legs over the side of his bed and got out.
He started to make his way to the door, intending to go to his mother's room to ask her if she'd heard the mysterios sound when he heard the noise again.
BANG!
Deidara whirled around just in time to see a bright, red light out of the window. Confused, he went over to it and looked out but the light was already gone and the night appeared quiet and altogether normal.
He sighed and turned away from the window. He had only taken one or two steps away from it when the quiet was shattered by another resounding BANG! and he turned back just in time to see purple sparks in the sky. His eyes grew wide as he took in the sight, instantly captivated - what in the world could be causing that?
He opened the window and pushed his head out, eyes glued to the spot where he had seen the mysterious sparks. He waited impatiently for the next explosion, barely noticing the cold wind that blew his already long hair into his eyes.
This time he heard it before he saw it - a shrill, whining noise filled the air and then a tiny, bright, red dot appeared in the sky, hurtling upwards. It was far away, above the village and it looked like a star, only mobile. He watched it hungrily, his anticipation for the blast to come mounting. Finally it stopped moving and then - BANG! - was replaced by a number of bright, green sparks. His mouth dropped open in shock and awe - he'd never before seen anything so beautiful.
From that moment onward, Deidara dedicated himself to finding a way to duplicate that magnificent sight...
