AN: This is just a little idea that was bouncing around in my head - please tell me what you think.
Disclaimer: Obviously I don't own the Mentalist or gain from writing stories about it...otherwise I'd be writing proper scripts not fanfiction.
Spoilers: Hmm... little bit for 2x06 I suppose

He watched her, sitting at her desk, pen in hand, flicking through yet more paperwork. She had never-ending mountain of case documents and complaints.
Her hand reached for the coffee on the desk in front of her and she took a sip, eyes never straying from the paper, never seeing him – watching her.
She was beautiful. The thought swept over him suddenly and he tried to force it away. He couldn't think like that. He glanced down at the wedding ring on his left hand and thought determinedly of his wife.
Inside her office Lisbon gave a gentle sigh, a contented sound, and closed up a file. Putting it aside, she selected another file, and took another sip of coffee as she opened it. His eyes were drawn back to her.
He daren't tell her how much he cared, how much he admired her. There was too much in the way. But he did admire her – everything about her.
He admired her courage and commitment and, even if they were occasionally a problem for him, her principles. He admired her determination to help everyone, to save the world (or as much of it as she possible could). And he even admired her gentleness, her kind heart, so carefully hidden from the tough world she lived in.
He wondered if she had any idea how much she meant to him.
He had killed to protect her. And he'd do it again. That startled him most – he really would do it again. It went against all his principles and yet, he would kill to save her – from anything, from anyone. Her safety, her happiness – that was everything to him.
Her loyalty amazed him most. He had honestly thought she would abandon him, let him fall. But she hadn't. She had saved him - she had risked everything to protect him. And he still wondered why, even now.
He wondered what he had done to deserve her protection. But then he felt that he didn't have to do anything. Lisbon's loyalty and protection came free, for anyone who worked with her.
She glanced up now, caught sight of him. She held his eyes warily, not smiling. He felt his heart sink. He wished he could make her smile again. Sometimes he longed for their relationship to be simple and teasing again. Not bound up by what he had done for her, and what she had done for him.
He smiled slightly. He was aiming for reassuring – hoping she would understand he wanted things to be okay between them.
She nodded gently. Then she gave a little smile in return. He would have to be satisfied he supposed.
Someone walked past him, pushing open the door of Lisbon's office and striding in confidently, a small box in his hand. The box was placed on the desk and Lisbon beamed at her visitor as she selected a strawberry from inside.
He felt a horrible, sickening feeling just watching them. Lisbon was laughing now, reaching for another strawberry. Then, as she looked up, she saw him, still outside her office, still staring.
He hurriedly turned and headed down the corridor, heart pounding.
He heard Jane's lightly mocking voice following him, "Strawberry, Sam?"
Bosco kept walking. He could feel fear and despair and anger welling up inside him. And he made himself a promise. If any harm ever came to Teresa Lisbon because of Patrick Jane, he would kill for her for a second time.
