Who will die first, and who will get left behind?
Both had questioned this, and both hadn't spoken of it to the other. Because why waste what they had to an uncertain future? It won't make any difference no matter how long they ponder on what lies ahead.
They had each other now. And that's better than they had expected months before.
But her dreams had something else in mind. She woke with a start four nights before their expedition and had knocked on his door minutes later. It was late and all were in slumber, therefore she decided it was safe to do so. And he had welcomed her with open arms, knowing the same.
Her words were scratches to her throat as she stifled the tears the images had brought in. And he listened well, and listened in silence.
She had seen his demise in her slumber. His body crushed and beaten, bloody against the greenery. And the questions were back, and she had little strength to keep them quiet.
And so they spoke of it for the first time. Words they dare not share, fears they dare not word out. The possibility of their stolen kisses, secret rendezvous and silent affections will all come to a halt, never to be felt again.
The thoughts crept on them, mostly to her but only because he had long since mastered the act of stoicism. Though he cannot deny the fears were his as well as hers.
In his attempt of comfort and kindness, he held on to her while she clears her mind. And he clears his, too. But instead, his mind had another thing.
Taking her hand and placing his lips on them, he dared ask a question she'd never imagined he would. And it pained her as much as it made her happy. She did not agree immediately, until he assured her.
Even if they were to part soon, at least they had this moment.
If this world does crumble down on them, at least they had each other even for a while.
Two days before the expedition, they were one. It was done in another secrecy, and only the necessary people they could gather immediately knew of it. Neither had cared for an extravagant ceremony, anyway. They had each other, and they had this moment.
And her smile that day was the brightest he had seen.
And this smile was all he could imagine when he saw the last glimpse of her face he would ever have. And it was this smile that he kept thinking of as he stared down on the piece of rock that held her name, but not her form.
Their world had ended, but they were lucky they had it in the first place.
At least, that's what he's been trying to convince himself.
A/N:
Sorry, this was really vague. To put simply, Petra had a dream where Levi died. Levi comforts her and suddenly proposes to her. They have a secret marriage 2 days before the expedition. And then the opposite happens cause it's Petra who dies and Levi is secretly a widower now.
I imagine their relationship to have been a secret, more so their marriage.
