Enigma

Disclaimer: No, I do not own Doctor Who. Stop asking me.

This one shot was inspired by x-Avarice-x's story 'His Name Is The Doctor'.

Enigma: Somebody or something that is difficult to understand or explain.

Everywhere you go, someone recognises you. A whisper of a legend, permeating the universe. You feel pride, vanity; you're somebody here. When you were Theta Sigma, no one took you seriously; now you're the Doctor, and everyone does. So why do you feel guilty for having such thoughts? No one wants to be ignored, after all.

No one you meet can say 'goodbye' to you, in the end. The hope of running into you again is always there, and the trust that you'll save them. But regular doctors can't always save their patients, and neither can you. Like regular doctors, you have to keep going. Can't get sentimental. Can't get distracted. Those you travel with are too fragile, and if you began to break, so would all of them. At least, that is what you believe.

Inside your mind are century's worth of memories; and the whole of time and space to boot. It's no wonder you have a dark side; no one can have so much in their heads without separating it out somehow. Dark, light, evil, good. You run from the bad side, not realising that you're running from the good side too. They're both a part of who you are. You can never run from that.

Great sights await you and your companions. Even after so long, there's a little bit of awe left when you gaze at a supernova, especially when there's someone to share the experience with. It's moments like that you wish could stay forever, with no obligations or regrets to impinge on your happiness. Then again, that would make your life more constant, and that wouldn't make you happy at all.

More enemies that you can count; why does doing the right thing have more repercussions than doing the wrong thing? You prevent invasions and destroy dystopias, and are rewarded with mistrust and hatred. You decide to leave planets and people to save themselves; no, you can never do that, not if it means losing the trust you still have.

Anyone that makes you feel admired, or simply needed, is a friend. They don't have to be a companion. Each companion is special, for all that there are so many of them. Each of them has the same spark, that shines as bright as any star, and lets you know, this is the person you need. Sometimes, you wonder if they ever secretly admired you.
