Just a Joke?

Sora reflects on her relationship with Matt, and what she never had with Taichi.

It's funny. Real funny. But isn't that the point? Aren't joke supposed to be funny? Aren't joke supposed to be humorous? But aren't jokes supposed to have a punch line too? Ten years later. And I still haven't gotten to the punch line.

Tai, he was so wrapped up in the job of leader, even after Davis took over, he almost never looked my way. So, I figured, what better way to get him to notice me then to go out with his best friend? I mean, I knew he'd try harder if he knew he had a little competition right? Shows how much I knew. He loved me. He loved me so much he was willing to step to the side when I chose someone else, and that, was that.

Every action I took with Matt was a challenge to Tai, but he never took them, as far as he was concerned, he had already lost, he had tuned me out. Anything rather than face the pain of rejection. I became just another person to him.

A wedding, and a son later, and this joke is still going on, I try to remember what the punch line was, but I no longer can. I heard Tai finally found someone else. I hid my shock. What? Did I think he was going to keep moping about losing me forever? Do I have an ego. Matt, he thinks I love him, that he had beaten Tai in the one thing that mattered most, me. Never dreaming that all of this, was supposed to be a joke. A joke I've sentenced myself to keep on living, forever.
