Here is a Thomas story entitled "Flora the Steam Tram" Enjoy and comment.
One morning, Flora the steam tram wasn't happy.
"Why does Toby get all the best jobs?" she complained to her driver. "He's so old, it's pointless him being here!"
"Well it is his branch line, Flora," her driver replied patiently. "We're only guests after all."
"But Toby is no fun." she muttered, though she said it too quietly for her driver to hear.
They finished their morning jobs, and Flora went to take on fresh water and coal. Toby was already there.
"Hello, Flora," he said pleasantly. "Have you had a good morning?"
"Not really," Flora replied flatly. "Same old freight cars and deliveries. They give all the fun jobs like pulling passengers to a pointless old engine like you."
"Flora!" her driver admonished sternly, but Toby remained nonplussed. He decided to ignore the comment Flora made about him being pointless. He remembered what it was like to be bored and lonely. When his old line had been shut down and the work had gradually slowed to a mere trickle, he hadn't been a particularly happy engine, either. Toby thought for a moment. After a very quick conversation with his driver, Toby spoke to Flora again as he moved forward so that she could get to the water tower.
"Actually, Flora," he said confidently, "I was wondering if you'd like to take my passengers this afternoon. I was thinking it might be peaceful to do some freight work today."
Flora was very surprised, not to mentioned ashamed of herself for the rude things she'd said to the older tram engine.
When she replied her voice was very quiet.
"Yes, please, Toby." she said. "I would like that very much."
So that afternoon they both set out to do their respective jobs; Flora enjoyed herself enormously, but she wished she hadn't been quite so rude about Toby and had simply asked him if he'd mind switching jobs with her instead.
Despite her earlier behaviour, her driver felt sorry for her.
"Never mind, old girl," he called cheerfully as they waited for their passengers to disembark. "You can talk to Toby later."
So Flora took her passengers home, and she enjoyed herself.
That night she spoke to Toby as her driver had suggested.
"I'm sorry I was rude to you, Toby," she said sadly. "I never should have called you pointless. Thank you so much for letting me take your passengers today."
Toby laughed good naturedly.
"Don't worry about it, Flora! Shall we forget all about it and be friends again? I'll let you have a turn at pulling passengers any time you like!"
Flora beamed.
"Yes please, Toby!" she replied, and the good friends went happily to sleep.
