Dr. Maura Isles stepped from the car and quickly pulled her jacket tighter around her shoulders. It was only September but the temperature had already dropped from the hot August days, foreshadowing the cold Boston winters to come. Maura's heels bit into the soft ground as she made her way across the lawn, the smell of freshly cut grass tickling her nose. She paid no attention to the sights or sounds of others as she made her way quickly to her goal.

"Sorry I'm late." Maura said as she placed the green canvas bag down by her side. "There was a bad accident on the expressway and traffic was backed up almost to downtown."

Maura's words tumbled out as she busied herself removing the various bottles and glasses from the bag.

"I managed to find a bottle of the '91 at that little shop on Water Street." Maura regarded the bottle of red wine in her hands thoughtfully. "You remember the place, the one set off the main road? I was lucky to get this, seems like all of Boston wanted this bottle." She gave out a wry little laugh.

Maura's best friend Jane Rizzoli remained quiet and once again Maura had to face the fact that her vibrant, bossy, active friend would never again answer her.

"I know it's been five years but." Maura's voice broke as she struggled and failed to complete the sentence. Instead, she occupied herself with opening the bottle of light beer and placing it on the shiny black granite slab in front of her. Maura picked out a few weeds that had gown around the sides of the stone and as she had done every year for five years she placed the bouquet of flowers next to the words that spelled out the story of that tragic late summer day

Jane Sabrina Rizzoli

Beloved Daughter and Sister

One of Boston's Finest

Maura traced the lines of the gold detective's badge engraved in the stone. As the tears made their way to the corners of her eyes she rose to her feet and lifted the wine glass to the rapidly darkening sky.

"To Jane. I miss you so much."

The End

AN- Thank you for reading. The characters of Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles belong to Tess Gerritsen and TNT respectively. Thank you to Tess for being open to fan fiction writers and for creating two awesome characters. No profit is being made by this but if TNT needs a writer for the show I am more than agreeable to it

For those eagle eyed readers. Yes, that is Angie Harmon's birthday but the year comes from a comment Jane makes to her mom in the pilot that "30 years of experience has taught me different."
