A little easter drabble. I just watched watched episode 25 of the DN anime series on the same day I finished reading the manga, I feel empty inside.

warnings: spoilers for L's name

----------

L Lawliet didn't believe in love.

He didn't believe in the emotion at all, just as he didn't believe in demons or magic. He didn't believe it, yet, every day he saw it, saw the people who killed or sacrificed their lives for it. To him though, love still didn't exist. It was a figment of the human imagination, a branch that could be held on to in the middle of the raging river of life.

If he didn't believe in love then, love at first sight was a thing of dreams. That stood firm when he first gazed upon that face, golden brown hair shining in the flickering light of the dieing light bulb, dark eyes like pools of warm honey, with a sparkle a something in their depths that drew L in like a moth to the fire that would one day destroy it.

It was just physical attraction. That thought ran around in his mind as a explanation for the feelings that became more prominent as he grew closer to the beautiful youth that could have the world at his feet with a single look. Who wouldn't acknowledge that the boy was beautiful? But even he felt that slowly, with every smile, he was falling even more.

There was no such thing as an emotion like love. He had always believed that but now, his ground was being taken away block by block, until only one left and he was teetering on the edge of oblivion. He fell and landed in the arms of his greatest rival and first friend, He was in the grip of the god of the new world, of Kira. Yet he did not struggle, he had done that enough in the beginning. All of his strength left him with one action, one word, one look. That was really all it took.

The fire consumes all, turning everything black and unrecognizable. He had been swept up by the flame of the one who he had tried his hardest to deny. Because a part of L's heart had, always, believed.
