Storm Hawks—The Last Rose of Summer

By WhispertheWolf

Starling walked along the wooded trail of Terra Mesa. She loved being on the home Terra of her squadron. Even so, it made her feel lonely, being here without them. She had just turned down an offer to join another squadron. They were kind to her and she treasured their friendship, but she had learned the hard way that nothing hurts worse than losing the ones she loved. If she loved no one, than she was protected from such feelings.

With the summer almost over, the plants were starting to turn brown like they do in the fall. It was passing by an old, faded rose bush that Starling stopped and stared.

'Tis the last rose of summer,

Left blooming alone.

Starling looked over the rose bush again and tried to find other flowers, but none she found.

All her lovely companions,

Are faded and gone.

No flower of her kindred,

No rosebud is nigh,

To reflect back her blushes,

To give sigh for sigh.

Starling thought it was a sad sight to see the rose all alone like that. "I know how you feel," she told the flower.

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one,

To pine on the stem.

Starling reached forward and picked the flower, holding it close. "It's hard to be alone, isn't it? You would rather join the others no matter how horrible a place they're in than be here by your lonesome."

Since the lovely are sleeping,

Go, sleep thou with them.

Thus kindly I scatter,

Thy leaves o'er the bed,

Where thy mates of the garden,

Lie scentless and dead.

Starling knew that was what she could do. When the time was right and no one needed her, when all of her friends were gone, she'd be gone, too.

So soon may I follow,

When friendships decay,

And from Love's shining circle,

The gems drop away.

One day, she won't have a duty to do. One day, she would be able to join them. But now, she was lonely, hanging on because the world needed her to. It got her thinking…

When true hearts lie withered,

And fond ones are flown,

Oh, who would inhabit,

This bleak world alone?

Last time I did songfics, I barely got any reviews. So this time, please, PLEASE review!
