Night time fell over a small cosy flat in the middle of Dalston. The eccentric looking second hand shop below it was dark and lifeless, gentle jazz music out drifted from one of the windows the entire scene was a picture of serenity, a picture which was quickly broken.
"HOWARD!"
Howard Moon, eater of rules, jazz maverick and all together man of action sprung to life at the quite feminine cry of help that had come from Vince's bedroom. He burst through the door of the brightly painted room to find Vince sat on top of his bed; knees tucked up to his chin, his hair looking dishevelled and his wide eyes were stuck on a point on the floor.
"You alright little man?"
The electro poof jumped slightly at the sound of his northern best friend. He quickly flicked his head towards Howard before looking back at the spot on the floor. He looked a little less tense now that the self proclaimed man of action had entered the room, noticing this Howard smiled a little until remembering the matter at hand. After a few moments of the smaller man not replying Howard spoke up once again.
"Vince? What's the matter?"
Again a few moments of silence before Vince slowly raised his hand and pointed at a spot on the floor.
"There's a really big spider over there"
All tension in the room was thrown out the window like an unwanted sandwich. Howard could only stare at the mod before he started chuckling at the lunacy of the situation.
"Is that it?" He asked trying to sound annoyed "I thought something awful had happened or that you'd seen a real ghost or…."
Howard found himself trailing off when he noticed the look of pure fear on his best friends face. He quickly regretted his words and in a quick movement scooped the spider of the floor and tossed it out the window. He turned to Vince and smiled gently.
"There," he said like a parent comforting a child "all gone. You okay?"
Vince said nothing and hid his face under his dark fringe; a look of shame had now replaced the fear on his face. Howard moved from the window and sat down next to him on the bed, slowly and almost awkwardly he placed an arm round the mod's small shoulders.
"It's alright little man, everyone's afraid of something. It's nothing to be ashamed of." He squeezed Vince's shoulder reassuringly and felt the smaller man begin to relax. "I used to be scared of sharks, wouldn't go anywhere near the sea. My mum always regretted letting me watch jaws." The maverick looked of dreamily for a second before snapping back to reality. "Never had you pegged for being scared of spiders though."
"Yeah, well," Vince replied shakily "That's a long story."
Howard rose from the bed and clapped a hand on the electro poof's shoulder.
"Come on, let's go talk about is over a cup of tea." Howard motioned towards the kitchen and Vince nodded, smiling slightly. After all, there are no problems in the world that tea couldn't solve.
