Jess stared solemnly at the face she knew so well. She had been there for
most of the hour, holding back the tears that were fighting to be freed.
Finally she couldn't bear to stay even a minute longer. She reached into the
casket to stroke his pale face once more. The second her boney finger touched
his pale cheek, she drew her hand back. His face would never again be full of
the warm glow she missed so intensely. As the tears welled in her eyes, Jess
leaned down to kiss Troy goodbye.

As she turned to walk home, Dylan touched her arm. "Leaving?" he asked
quietly.
Unable to speak, Jess nodded. The tears where becoming impossible to hold back.
Dylan turned toward his older brother. "I-...I just want to say
I'll miss you…you were the best brother…and friend I ever had..."
He said looking at the ground. Jess looked down and nodded again as a tear
rolled down her pale cheek. As Dylan peered into the casket, Jess thought she
felt a hand brush her face. She turned slightly and saw a white feather floating
toward the ground. She caught it before it landed and stood next to Dylan,
dropping the snow-white feather next to Troy's lifeless arm, remembering his favorite animal….the dove. Dylan closed his
eyes and sighed deeply, then looked up with an attempt at a smile. "Let's go", he
whispered and started to walk away. Jess slowly followed and started to get
attacked with the 'what ifs' 'what if I stopped him from going to the fight?"
she thought sadly, 'or maybe I should have told someone about the rumble…'
As they walked in silence away from the few mourning people dressed in black (most were just some of Troy's friends, most of which Jess knew),
Jess looked back where he was to be buried and felt a strange feeling of yearning.

"I will always be with you" she heard from somewhere inside her. Jess smiled, then jogged ahead to keep up with Dylan.
