AN *_*

Don't look at me like that, I know what your thinking, "I haven't updated for months, and this is just a waste of my time and yours." Well…. That is, and may still, be the case, but New Year, new story. Possibly….. Baby steps…

For Us All

In school I was always told, when writing or telling a story, to always start with the event that was most significant in your mind, when you thought back on the story or events later. To tell the whole story is impossible, but I'll try my best to do it justice, if not for myself then for Natalie.

The only real significant moment that comes to mind, is the start of it all.

The day that I met Natalie Galvez.

Beep! Sings the alarm clock.

It's only 7:30 and I already want to go back to sleep. Sitting up I look around my room, hoping to see something new or interesting about it, but not expecting anything.

"Same old, same old." I whisper

Sighing I let the morning go by in a blur. Breakfast is, as always, filled with shadow people, who barely talk and only speak out of necessity.

"Can you pass the butter?"

"Where's my tie?"

"Lillian shouldn't you be going? You'll miss your train."

And that's my cue to get out and stay out if only for a few hours.

The commute takes longer than normal, and I end up being late for Bio. That's the problem with commuting from Westchester County into New York City everyday just to attend your mother's upscale prep school, you end up with a lot of late slips, but no one bats an eyelash, because of who "mommy" is.

Sitting in second period, English, I can't help, but nod off. It's tiring, trying to not scream during breakfast. My snooze is interrupted suddenly, by a harsh, old and annoying voice saying

"Ms. Winslow! Are you sleeping in my class?" says Mrs. Flynder

"No ma'am." I say yawning

I hear titers behind my back from the other girls, we not an all-girls school, but the main subjects are kept Catholic school worthy.

Ms. Flynder scowls at me, but then the bell rings and I'm set free. I quickly excuse myself and find my way down the hallway to the restroom. I've commenced with my mooring routine of avoiding gym class, when the door to the restroom swings open.

Beat -

A girl probably around my age, 16, is standing, disheveled and out of breath, in front of me. Her hair, a messy black Bob, is sticking up around her head in every direction, her eyes, are dark green pools of panic. Her uniform, which looks fairly new, is stained with coffee, and her shirt isn't in the slandered tuck, that all private schools seem to favor.

Basically she's a mess.

"Um… hey…." She says intelligently

"Hi" I say back "You… alright?" I gesture to her general state of unkempt-ness.

Smirking she says

"Yeah I'm great, and yourself?" She gestures mockingly back at me

I roll my eyes at her and turn to face the mirror

"Just asking." I say "Don't have to be a bitch about it." I mutter

I expect her to get pissed, or if nothing else, leave the bathroom and me in peace. Instead she just smiles and says

"Nice to meet someone around here who has some spunk." She grins at me, and for some reason I can't help, but smile back at her.

"Natalie, in case you were wondering." She speaks to fill the quiet

"Lillian." I say back "You know - in case you were wondering."

She laughs and I soon find myself joining in.
