"What do you see, when you look into the mirror?"

"Lord Eliwood?"

He was watching her from across the room, removing a heavy cloak his shoulders. Snow dusted his bright hair, and the gray-white look aged him ten years. Ninian liked the sight. She knew it was one she would never truly see.

Glancing back to the mirror, which was as wide and clear as a window, Ninian studied her pale features and icy-colored hair. Her vivid eyes gleamed like little fires. But her eyes never held her attention – they were always the same to her. The color, the light, the sparkle, they never changed.

But what always fascinated her was her little nose, her pale lips, her thin eyebrows. All the features that were so peculiarly human. She usually loved the mirror in her room, for almost every time she glanced at it – half expecting to see her true form, as she always did, but seeing instead a very human girl – she reminded herself that she had chosen this world, this life, and never once regretted it.

"I wonder if you see the same thing I do," he said, stepping up behind her. He wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her pink cheeks. "The most beautiful woman in all of Elibe? In all of the world?"

Her cheeks turned even pinker. She had never felt that heated rush when beyond the Dragon's Gate.

But occasionally, not even Eliwood's presence at her side could sway what she imagined she saw in the many beautiful mirrors of her palace home. No matter what her eyes showed her, her mind sometimes held a different opinion.

She sometimes caught a glimpse of a dragon in the silver. Out of the corner of her vision, even in a blank mirror, she would imagine that looming figure of her nightmares, her true self, her true power.
