So, I was watching an Avatar- The Last Airbender episode. This one was called "The Tales of Ba Sing Se." In this one, Iroh sings a song called, "Leaves from a Vine." Anyway, the lyrics so totally fit this story. So, tell me what you think.
Leroy Jethro Gibbs sat down in his chair, leaned back, and opened a bottle of bourbon. He took a deep breath, breathing in the saw dust and bourbon scents that frequented his basement. Fainter were the scents of Miss Hart and of Tony, Ziva and Abby, his father, Ducky, and McGee. Even more faint were the scents of his loves. Jenny, Shannon and Kelly. At this point, those scents weren't even real, just… memories. He took in a deep drink of the bourbon and let out a sigh. It seemed that he was destined to help those who needed, but to never save those who needed it the most. Jenny would have saved Ziva. McGee would have been rehired by any other person; they just wouldn't have told him why. Tony would have dealt with the plague and Kate dying and Jeanne with someone else. But he could have saved Shannon and Kelly; all he had to do was stay home, call occasionally, ask the right questions. He could have saved Jenny; he should have saved her. He should have chased her after Paris, followed her to Europe, gotten a transfer to wherever she had been going. He should have, but he hadn't. Instead, he had fed himself some lies that she would be all right. He should have asked her more questions about her kill, made sure she actually had killed her. Kate… That bullet should have been through his head; instead, Ari decided to play with them and killed her first. Then he tried to kill Abby, then Jenny. It did not matter that he had helped Ziva before; that was her headache to figure out. All that mattered to him was that he hadn't saved them. He had helped others, but hadn't helped them. And that would never change.
Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile tiny shells
Drifting in the foam…
Little soldier boy
Come marching home
Brave soldier boy
Comes marching home…
