Thank you for Choosing Amtech. "Passengers, please buckle your seatbelts and remain seated while the shuttle passes the next gravitational system. We should be reaching our destination shortly. Incase of emergency the oxygen masks will be dropped, our attendants will be walking down the isle, showing you how to properly use them. We hope that you enjoy your ride, and want to thank you for choosing Amtech."
The announcement brought me back to consciousness. No way had I expected to reach Jupiter so soon, and the thrill of my first Amtech ride was both exhilarating, and exhausting. I hadn't slept now for 18 hours, and it was really getting to me. I began doing just what the announcer said, and buckled my seatbelt, looking around to the other passengers. They to, apparently, hadn't had much sleep, and most of them had dozed off again. I was returning the camera to my backpack, when one of the attendants caught my eye. I watched her a while, and noted something awkward with her step. Then, upon looking around, I noticed ALL the attendants acting.well..different. All of them were going up to the front where the captain was, hustling back and forth, whispering among themselves. What they were saying, I had not clue for the time being. The same thing was happening to every single one. They would go in, and come out, with the same, grave, and worried look on their faces. I couldn't take it any longer, I HAD to know what was going on.
"What is happening around.". My question was cut short by a sudden thrust of the ship. The jump made my stomach lurch into my throat. The fear and suddenness of the movement gripped my heart like iron claws digging into soft butter. Another thrust followed, this one much larger than the last, and a searing pain hit me as I felt my neck snap forward and my bones crack. The forward motion brought my head to the sharp, jagged corner of the eating tray in front of me, bringing a warm trickle of crimson ooze down my face.
The people around me were having just as much, if not more trouble then me. Family members cried and screamed for each other. It appeared that the attendants could do nothing but watch, as another ship went down the wrong side of the space transportation tunnels, and ours had been the unlucky ship to get caught by their mistake. In the moment of panic, all attention turned upward as another announcement came through the speakers, telling everyone what has happened, and that it will be ok. Ok?! I couldn't believe they were lying to us like that, but I listened again. I heard the voice say that a fire had broken out, and that oxygen masks were going to be dropped. I waited. Several minutes had gone by and still no masks had fallen. Once again the captains voice filled the air, saying that the fire had taken out the masks, but the attendants would be passing out temporary oxygen. By the time they got to me, my lungs felt as if they were going to burst. The pressure was building in me, and my body begged for air. When they did come, the mask was on my face as quickly as I could manage, and I almost choked as the air gushed through, replacing the smoke that had already filled my lungs.
"tttssshhhhhh...bzzzzzzzzzz". The announcements were no longer coming through. Flames began licking the sides of the ship, and I heard another passenger saying that they could smell gas. The oxygen masks fell, but they were no use now. A gigantic wall of flame shot down the hallway towards me, and shards of metal were shooting everywhere as the ship ended its final course. My focus seemed to block out everything but the announcements, which were now going haywire. "Please, enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, bzzzzzzzzz...Thank you for choosing Amtech" these were the last things to fill my ears.
