"Ne, Captain Aizen", Gin murmured as he sheathed his sword, one toe prodding at a recently deceased member of Room 46, "I gotta wonder where we're gonna hide all these bodies. Won't someone come lookin' for these venerable folks?"
Aizen smiled then, eyes sharp as he brought a handkerchief out from the folds of his kimono to wipe blood off of his glasses, "Surely Gin, you of all individuals should understand the inherent weakness of our beloved court of pure souls."
Gin had the grace to scratch his head and broaden his smile perhaps a fraction of an inch before making absolutely no reply.
Aizen shook his head benevolently, a practiced gesture which precluded an answer as fastidious and pragmatic as his attentions to his eyewear, "These wise men and judges of the Central 46 Chamber were gods of the living and spiritual world, casting judgment on all who came under their illustrious gaze." Aizen replaced his glasses, now using the cloth to work out the last traces of blood from under his nails, "They were set apart, distant and untouchable to keep them just and strong. Soul Society's brain, kept intentionally disconnected from its sword. The unquestioning servitude of the Gotei 13 can be exploited, but you already knew that, Gin. Are you really bored enough to try asking me such silly questions?"
"And why me "of all individuals", Captain?" Gin continued as he closed the sliding doors behind them, the pair striding genially away from the area.
"Because, my adorable adjutant, you have glimpsed the heights from the depths of Rukongai."
"Captain, I'm offended. Rukongai folk ain't all coarseness and treason," Gin baited playfully.
"Not at all Gin. I remember you during your first years at the academy. You had no disillusions of the spiritual superiority of your superiors. I am sad to say, my fellow captains do not share your refreshing sense of loyalty to strength without regard for a human sense of justice.
"I love it when you tell that story. Come on, do it proper. Start from the beginning."
"You love it because you are the main character, Gin", Aizen chided gently.
"Everyone else is so boring, Captain." Gin grinned.
Aizen shook his head and continued, "Boring or not, with such singular obedience very few captains will give the cold execution of young Kuchiki Rukia a second thought. Fewer will petition for mercy on her behalf. And no one will think to step foot inside those chambers during times of peace, much less during a time of war.
"War?" Gin asked, for the first time sincere.
"Urahara must perceive my pursuit of his invention by now. He can not come himself, but if any man can find a way to cause trouble, it is him. Yes, whatever he sends will surely bring to Soul Society some very pressing concerns."
Gin laughed then, shaking his head as they turned a corner and caught a glimpse of Kira dashing about in pursuit of Gin's ever elusive reiatsu, "Aaa, Kira-kun is looking so distressed, maybe its news about Urahara-san's surprise? Nope, I just can't wait to hear." Gin bowed lightly as Aizen inclined his head before each parted ways.
"Ah! Captain! Where did you come from!?" Kira exclaimed in a fluttering voice as Aizen lifted Kyouka Suigetsu's protection from Gin. Aizen smiled, calmly, coolly, watching Gin at his play.
"Ne, Ki-ra-kun! So flushed! Why in such a tizzy?"
"An explosion overhead, Captain. Ryoka are now reported to be battling at the West Gate."
"Aww… is that all Kira-kun? I thought it might be something more interesting… well, let's go see anyway, ne?"
Gin felt the slightest disturbance of air, and knew that Aizen had allowed him to feel even that small indication of his departure.
"My, My", Gin crooned dryly as he strode in the direction of the west gate, Kira falling in step behind him, "How scary. Ryoka."
