James pulled up to Lily's house and put the car in park. His mother had decided that it would be beneficial for James to know how to drive the family car. It was dark outside and her porch light was bright. There were lights on in the house and James figured that her parents were still up.

"I had a good time tonight," Lily whispered in the hushed quiet of his car.

James turned in his seat and smiled at her. "I'm glad," he said while taking her hand in his. He gave it a gentle squeeze. They sat there, smiling at each other before James decided it was time to go. He unbuckled his seatbelt and climbed out of his car. Wanting to be a gentleman, he strode around the front of the car and opened Lily's door for her. She beamed at him. He offered her his hand and she took it, pulling herself from his car and out onto the cracked sidewalk.

They walked slowly up to her front door, holding hands and smiling sideways at each other. Lily fumbled with her keys a lot and kept smiling at him.

"I had a good time tonight," she said again. She stepped forward nervously and lowered her hands to her sides.

"I'm glad," James repeated, smiling at her. James, too, took a step forward.

"Me too," she said. Then suddenly she leaned forward and pushed up on her toes and kissed him. He didn't have a chance to kiss her back or to even move. She moved quickly to her door and went inside, giggling.

James stood on Lily's porch for a dumbstruck moment before wandering back to his car. He leaned back in the driver's seat and grinned. It wasn't what he had expected, but it was a nice first kiss.
