Hi everyone! This is my first fanfic, so be nice! ;) I hope you all enjoy it and I hope you all stick with me until the very end of this journey. I'm open to any ideas so, if you all have any, please, please, please tell me!

I was born into a dark fate, or so I'm told. It was meant for death to come and snatch away my very life when I was just two months old but someone, something intervened and decided I was to live. For what purpose? I've yet to find out. I was given a gift... a second chance at life and love has been all I've ever known to give. And yet, here I am... alone. Everyone I have ever loved has been snatched away from me by death. So, I walk this journey with a desire to love and be loved, to be a light in the dark.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." -Martin Luther King

In the city of Manhattan, New York, a storm began to brew as a woman around the age of 50 stepped out of a convenience store. Rain started to pour and she hastily ran to her car unlocking it.

"I knew this storm would catch up. I just knew it!" She sat inside, fixing a few brown strands of hair. "If I had only left the house earlier, I'd be spared from the storm."

It was 1991, a cold, rainy December night. She turned on the radio to break the silence as she drove the long road ahead of her. Everything about tonight was so depressing. She needed to liven up the mood and began to hum to the song on the radio. She smiled, thinking about the lyrics when it was interrupted by the weather news.

"This is your weather update. Breaking news! A sever thunderstorm warning has been issued for the following counties-"

"Always when I'm driving!" She pressed on the accelerator just a tad bit more, "I hope I closed all the windows." She paused and gasped. "Did I even lock the door?!" She had a tendency to forget the most important of things. Life was growing on her. She never had any children, no siblings, no cousins who lived nearby. People who knew her admired the fact that she still felt the urge to live her life and make the most of it. Nothing stopped her from smiling. If death was to come and take her life one day, she might as well live it to the fullest.

She laughed at the thought of her home with the windows open and her door unlocked. At least she'll have something to talk about with that handsome neighbor of hers who she had pleasant afternoon conversations. He was probably 5 years older. A veteran, with the most heart wrenching stories to tell. He was kind and a rarity of a man. Chivalry was still alive!

As her thoughts lingered on him, a sudden lightning flashed crashing into the wet street before her. She automatically pressed on the brakes, her vehicle leaving skid marks on its track and almost tipped over as it suddenly stopped. All her groceries had scrambled over her car's floor. She frowned at the mess, moaning in the realization that she'll have to clean that up, eventually. What she thought to be lightning was actually wings enflamed with fire. She swore to have seen them but as abruptly as they had appeared, they disappeared.

Those were wings right? of fire... right?

"What was that...?" She whispered. The woman failed to convince her mind about what had just happened, betraying what her eyes had seen a few seconds ago. Her eyes fell on a bundle lying on the cold, wet road. The light of her car gave way to it but she couldn't make out what it was. With trembling hands she slowly opened the door of her vehicle. She stepped out and cautiously walked over to a small object in front of her. A cold, crying, baby girl was laying before her.

She gasped, sprinting over to the baby as fast as she could. She grabbed the baby, holding her close to give her warmth. "Shh... shh... it's okay, little angel."

Her heart broke. How could anyone leave a helpless baby out on the road, especially in this kind of weather? She never thought anything like this could happen to her. Was the heavens answering her prayers with this child? Who was that being that left the baby here? Whatever the outcome, she wasn't about to leave the baby alone.

Curiously, she uncovered the baby's face to see her, and what she saw caught her off guard. Sparkling sapphire blue eyes were looking up at her. They reminded her of the ocean. "Odd," she said. "I've never seen this before.."

The woman's brown eyes grew wide as she noticed unearthly features on the baby girl. Something like cat ears adorned her head. At first, she thought it was a headband, but as she attempted to remove them the baby cried.

"What..?" She said to herself in disbelief. She shook her head saying to herself that she'd wake up from this nightmare. Another lightning hit, followed by thunder, breaking her from her thoughts and bringing her back to reality.

"The storm!" She said. "We gotta go!

Without hesitation, she decided it was best to take the baby and headed to her vehicle. As quickly as she could, she dumped out whatever remaining groceries that were in a cardboard box and gently placed the crying baby girl in it. She moved the box to the bottom of the back seat. "You'll be safe here." She assured the baby, closing the car door. She took her place in the driver's seat and drove off.

As they arrived to her home, she drove into the driveway and parked. Turning the engine off, she sat there contemplating what had just happened. Her hands were still shaking and her heart was pounding quickly in her chest. She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath.

She stepped out and retrieved the baby from the back seat. Closing all the doors and locking her car, she walked over to the house and went in. Warm and inviting, the air smelled of cinnamon and vanilla.

"You must be freezing! " She wrapped the baby girl in new, warm and dry blankets. The child still cried, uncontrollably.

The woman frantically looked around her kitchen, searching for anything that the child could drink out of. "You're probably hungry and sleepy, and I don't have any bottles!" She poured milk into a pan to warm it up and found a cup with the smallest spout she could find. "This will have to do." She served the milk into the cup and walked over to the living room.

"I don't know your name but I'm sure you don't mind me giving you one." She spoke as she sat down in her rocking chair, feeding the milk to the child. It seemed to work wonderfully. The hungry baby drank to her delight.

"Tomorrow, we will go shopping for clothes." Looking down at the beautiful baby girl, she smiled as the baby opened her eyes and stared at her.

"So beautiful...and how is this possible?" She gently touched the baby's ears and they twitched at her touch. She laughed in amusement. "You are something special... Sapphire." It ringed beautifully in her ears. She nodded in satisfaction. "Yes, that will be your name. Sapphire." As she rocked back and forth, the baby stopped feeding and began to close her eyes, drifting off to sleep. In that moment, the woman knew her lonely life was finally over, and for that she smiled and thanked the heavens.
