KALIN
Yep it's Actually a Camp
I need to tell you this right now. If you are reading this then you need to remember, that I have finished what I was supposed too. I don't want to elaborate any more than that. I don't want you all moopy and freaking out. Look, basically, show this to Chiron. Show him… everything. Please?
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
So I should most tell you upfront that I shouldn't be alive.
Well, by standards of normal demigods I should have been found, claimed, and been training for several years now. I should be in a cabin with my brothers and sisters, loving them like a family, already developed a bond of trust and loyalty.
Sadly this was not the case. I'm 18 and I still haven't made it to Camp Half-Blood. I've spent majority of my life hunted by monsters that shouldn't even be real. I've been chased, beaten down, and almost killed every single day of my life. Being alone in the world filled with monsters without any training for several years and I'm still alive? Impressive if I do say so myself.
Although I haven't been alone per say. I've had this annoying companion alongside me for a good several years. Julian Harcourt. But he prefers Jules. Basically I saved him from a group of Giants and he has stuck by me ever since. Since the age of 14 he and I have been fighting alone on the run from monsters and mortals. It wasn't until we ran into Terrance Swarlington, a satyr in disguise as a human, that everything changed for us.
Yes we met a guy named Terrance that was YES a SATYR from Greek Mythology. Apparently as Terrance put it: the entire western world was made by the Greek gods and they had children. Apparently Julian and I were some of these offspring, who fought monsters that sought to destroy demigods and the gods themselves. So yeah, Terrance was a real winner in the 'being a demigod is great' department.
"How old are you two?!" He asked when he first met us.
"Um...18?" I answered. Julian nodded that he was the same.
"How are you two even alive?!" He exclaimed, staring at us like we were two people that just jumped off a plane without a parachute and lived, "You two should be guaranteed dead!"
So you can see Terrance was just a real joy to have around.
Yes I said was. He was killed in Florida. I did miss him. He answered a lot of questions I had about the world with this Greek Mythology is real stuff including what killed my father…
I sighed as I saw Julian pulled out a cigarette.
"Jules," I said, "You know that shits bad for you."
Julian raised an eyebrow at me and stopped the cig halfway towards his mouth.
"Uh huh?"
"So you shouldn't smoke it…" I said slowly.
Julian put the cigarette in his mouth, and winked, "It's fine Kalin. Relax, we are almost there anyways. One cigarette won't kill anyone. Plus we are fine."
I winced. I normally didn't believe in karma or superstitious stuff but ever since Julian and I have been trying to reach this Camp Half-Blood that Terrance the satyr had been telling us about, anything about we are safe or we have nothing to worry about had completely flopped in our faces.
Once we even killed this snake lady thing, she called herself a dracaenae, and Jules muttered, "We should be good now," and another six more showed up. So I try not to say anything that could jinx us. Jules on the other hand? He loved fighting. He was just crazy like that. Loyal to the end but crazy.
That aside you can see why I don't like to jinx things.
Jules lit the cig and let out a long smoke puff that surrounded us for a second. I looked at the side of the road and noticed just how sheer empty it was here. In front of us was an enormous hill, apparently, according to the satyr that we ran into back in Manhattan, we were supposed to walk to the peak and the camp was just before it.
Julian wasn't too enthusiastic that the safe haven for people like us was in the middle of nowhere and was LITERALLY a camp. He told me he was aiming towards a secret hidden fortress hidden by magical means of power or something.
Remembering the memory made me chuckle, "I mean if it's actually a damn camp for boy scouts, I swear Kalin, you will owe me big time. I'm not good at tying knots my dude." He said as we ate outside of a Subway.
I told him that it'll be fine, but he didn't seem convinced. But I knew he would follow me into hell if I asked him too. That's just how we were.
Truthfully, I didn't trust this idea of a safe haven. Everyone we met died. Sounds over dramatic I know but I'm being serious. Seven satyrs, three demigods and gods knows how many mortals have fallen since we began our quest to try to get to Camp Half-Blood. All along the way we seemed to have the worst luck. No not luck, it was as one of the demigods we met in D.C. put it, "You two radiate so much monster energy that it seems any monster within a 5 mile radius goes after you. Its ridiculous."
That being said, it explained why we were attacked so often. I mean we couldn't go anywhere without something attacking us. We had to rotate sleeping shifts it got so bad at one point. Granted once we got into New York, it eased up a bit. Actually it eased up a lot. We hadn't been attacked in over a week. I had a bad feeling.
Julian ran his hand through his swept back, long, dark hair. He sometimes kept it in a ponytail but today he didn't seem to mind. His bright green eyes seemed to dance as the sun set in front of us. Julian rarely told me of his past prior to meeting me. He kept a fierce guard up, always dodging questions or outright getting angry. I stopped pressing a long time ago. He would tell me when he was ready.
From what I gathered, he lost his mom in the same way I lost my father. Murdered by those of the sky. At least that's what the voices in my dreams say. I could still hear the voices in the back of my mind, whispering, "Traitors… Murderers… Beware the Greeks Kalin… Traitors they are…"
I pushed the strange voices aside and slowly began my trek up the hill. It was a nice clean slope, with a tall long pine tree at its peak. Something gold was hanging on one of its lowest branches. Strange for people to put a golden rug on a tree. The sun was really beginning to set, casting the sky into an orange haze. There was a powerful breeze, cooling the hot June air.
Julian finally finished his cig and flicked aside, before set his shoulders. On his waist his twin bronze swords hung, his tattered black v neck was barely hanging on his body. Kalin felt a twinge of anger at the sight of his state. He never once complained, no matter how many times they fought, starved or ran until their legs were exhausted, Julian always pushed through it and asked for more. Now they were almost home. Well what was supposed to be their home. But if the voices were to be trusted…
"THERE!" A raspy voice cried out behind them.
I turned around and drew my blade, Aseras, a greek Xiphos, just as Julian drew his twin bronze blades. Looking at my blade made me wince in remembrance of my father. How he thrusted it into my hands and told me to run. How I tried to stay… how I failed him. I shook my head and looked at the beings in front of us.
In front of us stood an enormous giant, with five or six hellhounds, some more of those snake ladies, dracaenae, with a phalanx of dead Greek Warriors. At their front was a man in old Greek Armor, with gems encrusted in the breast plate. Well he wasn't as good looking as he sounded, his armor looked as if it was meant for a young and fit warrior and not an overweight man. The fat warrior bore a knife at his belt with jewels encrusted in them. His helm was held in his hand.
"Who are you?" I demanded, keeping my sword held low.
I took very slow steps back, careful not to let the dead warriors catch on that I might dash. We were mere steps from seeing what was on the other side of the hill. If we could get someone's attention we might be able to get help. That is if we hadn't been lied too all this time.
The dead, fat warrior held up his head and stared straight into my eyes, "I am Agamemnon, The Greatest king of Greece, You two are very special."
Julian wasn't much for words, he prefered to defeat what was a threat to him instead of using a diplomatic approach. I tended to agree. However this seemed to catch his attention, "What do you mean special? As in we are demigod special? Yeah we know that already," Julian said, spinning his blades eagerly.
Agamemnon laughed long and hard at this, "Oh yes indeed son of the War God. But there is so much more to your fate than you realize. What will you choose I wonder?"
I didn't know what he was talking about but I knew I wasn't going to let him mess with Julian's head.
"What do you want with us Agamemnon?" I asked keeping my voice level.
The old king smiled at us, "I want to see what you two will choose. Remember, that in the end that democracy failed us. There should always be a king. I just hope you choose the right side."
That seemed to set Julian off, "So basically if we don't join whatever it is you are trying to do, you will what? Kill us? I dare you."
He pushed forward a few steps before Agamemnon sighed, "I'll see you two again. But don't forget what I said! I'll leave you two to deal with my friends then." Agamemnon turned around and walked off before fading away.
Then the monsters attacked.
I've got clarify something first. When I said Julian loved to fight, it wasn't becuase he was violent or crazy. It was because he was devastatingly great at it.
Julian dashed forward, just as a hellhound leapt at him. He swung his blade in an arr, dissolving the beast into monster dust before he thrusted out with a kick and knocked a dracaenae back. The monsters seemed to focus on Julian while the undead greek warriors broke formation and approached me.
I looked down at my sword. One vs twelve? Thirteen? Just my luck. But I refused to lose. Not after I came this far. Not when Julian is putting his life on the line. I felt a surge of strength and dashed at the warrior to my left, with a feign to his right, I skipped left and plunged my sword into his neck. He dissolved instantly, but I didn't stop there. Aseras seemed to glow with power, it felt as if it was pulling me forward rather than the otherway around. I kicked another warrior in his shield, sending him tumbling back into a few of his comrades before decapitating another one behind me. I couldn't be killed, I couldn't be touched. I wasn't going to fall. Not now. Not here. I cut down a few more of the warriors before the remaining six formed a semicircle a few feet away from me. I shot a quick glance at Julian.
He seemed to be doing fairly well as he had killed several of the hellhounds and a few dracaenae, but there was a large amount still. Julian was cut on his shoulder and thigh and was backing up to the peak of the hill. I was just about to see how serious his leg injury was when a sudden movement to my right got my attention.
I instinctively raised my sword and deflected a spear thrust from an undead warrior, I fell back onto the ground. The remaining undead seemed to smile at the sight of my demise.
"Kalin!" Julian yelled.
Just as the undead warrior who struck at me raised his spear, an arrow suddenly protruded from his chest. A golden one. Suddenly three more followed suit and the warrior dissolved.
Horns could be hear and then the sound of battle crys. The undead warriors charged past me and into a line of armored teens and adults.
I pushed myself to my feet and blinked in surprise at the sight before me.
Julian was watching as archers shot arrows at the the giant, who hopelessly was trying to swat them out of the sky like mosquitoes. Roughly two dozen people in orange shirts, covered with armor had rushed over the hill and were cutting down the monsters and undead warriors. And more seemed to be coming up the hill to help, including a man on horseback.
Wait… no it's a man fused into a horse. I wracked my brain for the term, Centaur! That's it! Or was it a cyclops. I couldn't remember. I decided to figure it out later.
I rushed over to Julian who was talking too a few other warriors.
"I don't know you. All I know was that I was following Kalin because a satyr told us to come here. Is this actually a camp by the way?" Julian said in a rapid fire tone. It was clear he was ticked off.
I sheathed my sword Aseras and stood next to Julian, "Whats going on here? Who are you?"
A woman in greek armor stared at me with fierce stormy grey eyes. Her long blonde curls fell to her mid back, while her tanned skin shined devastatingly. She had She was seriously beautiful. "I am Annabeth Chase, Daughter of Athena, the question is: Who are you two?"
I turned around and noticed the crowd of warriors fighting the monsters had already finished and came up behind me. Julian looked from the warriors to me. I knew what he was saying, "Fight or Flight?"
I knew for a fact we couldn't fight them all. It was suicidal. But flee? No… Better we join and see if its worth joining. They seemed organized enough. I gave Julian a quick glance before looking at Annabeth, "I am Kalin DiMichaelis, and this is my best friend-"
"Julian Harcourt," Julian finished, as he put his swords in their sheathes.
Annabeth opened her mouth to speak just at the centaur-cyclops thing approached, "Well then, welcome you two. This is Camp Half-Blood, a home to all greek and Roman Demigods. Preferably we house the Greeks but we get a roman here and there. I am Chiron, we shall get someone to show you-"
Suddenly there was a gasp as everyone jumped back away from us. I looked around and noticed a red glow, I slowly looked over a Julian and sure enough there was an enormous Red Boar flowing above his head.
"So it seems Julian has been claimed a son of Ares, the war god," the centaur/possibly a Cyclops named Chiron spoke quietly.
For a moment all was quiet, then Julian spoke, "Wait so this is actually a damn camp?!"
I couldn't help but laugh in spite of it all.
