The Key
Picking the lock was easy, she had done it so many times before, she slowly pushed the door open then stopped, hesitated then shook it off and went inside closing the door behind her. She kept wondering what was wrong with her, she never hesitated before, every time she checked out a suspect, she always knew she was invading someone's privacy but she also knew she had a good reason, what was so different this time?
Then again this was one of her friend's privacy she was invading, one of her best friends' infact, she shouldn't even think of her as a possible suspect, but then again she was the only one who… maybe she was wrong but she had to be sure.
She went over to the desk and went through the books; papers she even looked tin the drawers but didn't find anything. She continued searching through the drawers in the bedside table, the cupboard was next, she found nothing. She sat down on the bed, she still couldn't believe her friend was involved, but then ever since this case started, she had been acting strangely and always got upset or angry when it was mentioned.
She sighed; she had found nothing to prove whether she was right or wrong. She got up to leave when she dropped her penlight, she bent down to pick it up and glanced under the bed, there was a shoe box that looked like it had been pushed there in a hurry. She reached for it, knowing that she didn't have much time left, she opened it and looked inside, there were letters, photographs and staring at her from amongst the mess was the very thing she had been looking for the very thing she needed to solve the case.
She sat there staring at it, not knowing what to do, questions after questions forming in her mind, if she took it with her it would be missed, if she didn't she wouldn't be able to solve the case. She was still pondering about what to do next when she heard faint voices coming from outside. She took it, hastily pushed the box back under the bed, took one look around to make sure everything was in its place. She raced to the door, let herself out and locked it just as she heard footsteps coming up the stairs.
She ran down the corridor and climbed out the window she stood on the ledge not even daring to breathe as heard voices coming from inside. She heard the sound of a door closing and receding voices going down the stairs. She breathed a sigh of relief and climbed down the pipe near the ledge. She ran across the backyard and climbed over the fence and hurried to the place she had parked her car, all the while worrying about what would happen next.
