Spoilers: none - only that, by the last movie, they were completely together... yea!
Summary: what might have Mulder and Scully's wedding been like?
He wore Navy.
She would have thought that was ironic fifteen years ago.
She still wore white.
It was the second time he was watching white walk towards him; this time it was less surreal, more… more 'til death do us part.
He was okay with that. He'd gone to Antarctic with an anti-viral for her and that was after Duane Barry had had her and she'd come back to him, come back to them all.
Diana (his first wife)- Diana had been torched with the resistance in a way station long after their divorce had been finalized and he still could not erase the suspicion Diana had been furthering an inhuman agenda.
She took off her trench and handed it to her mother in exchange for a bouquet of $45 roses + ect. in leu of walking down the isle on the arm of her father.
They were in a tiny court room after all and she'd not let him see the dress; this tradition she was keeping. The flowers were her Mom's doing; it was what Margaret could do in a pinch and Margaret had demanded the most for her money from the Grocer. Dana handed off the trench for the bouquet and turned and stared at him.
She considered him; the narrative was the usual: does he… does she… then: yes and yes.
Dana mentally thought out her vows over the judge's:
Do I take your obstinance, your intractability and your pigheadedness in health and in sickness for as long as we both shall live?
She'd already done that, she'd done that in the first week of their partnership.
"I do" she voiced and he quirked a smile at her; it was at times like this she doubted he couldn't still hear others' thoughts; especially as when he was smiling when she began her response.
"Do you take her?" was all he had heard; she was sure of it.
She watched him watch her while the judge spoke on and anything more was superfluous.
He'd was still smiling while the Judge wrapped up. Maybe she should have had something added in: something along the lines of " and I'll always obey my partner from 11 to 12 every day" or "on Wednesday" but he'd wouldn't so why bother?
The Justice of the Peace waived about his hand and she pressed his ring onto his finger, her own finger feeling heavy for the first time in her life, heavier by an band of gold.
Her mom was crying.
He hugged her Mom before she could even move.
"I now pronounce you man and wife" the Justice declared; he'd taken up her mom and all Dana could do was stare in astonishment at her left hand. Frohikie, had he lived, would be so bummed out tonight. She turned, slightly, looking at her Mom; Her mom, who'd witnessed her countless accommodations and graduations, her Mom whose head nearly reached Fox's navy-clad shoulder and was a gracious tearful mess; her Mom, widowed and the only surviving parent the two of them could claim witnessed the ceremony and Dana was glad.
Tomorrow was tomorrow but right now her husband was embracing her Mom and then it was her turn, she and her Mom hugging tight, her mom whispering "Dana, I'm so happy… so happy for you" in her ear, and then it was time for Dana and Fox, Scully and Mulder - or, as written on the marriage certificate: Dana and M. F. Luder.
God help her: she was now legally Dr. Dana Luder, maybe it was time to get touch with the Bureau.
