Mortalitas

It was always the same, a never ending spiral towards a darkness that was never reached.

An endless fall through space and time, all the while waiting for the moment of impact, the terrible crunching that would mean the end

An end that never came

Each time he waited for the moment when the trigger would be pulled, the terrible burning cold of the metal pushed against his temple as sweat dribbled down the crease where his collar meet his skin.

It twisted this way and that, playing with his mind, taunting him as his toes and fingers curled in mental agony over what he knew was coming.

His mind screamed in anguish, feeling the numb sensation of metal against hot, red skin.

His knuckles ached with unresolved tension as his jaw clenched against his tongue, the metallic dribble of blood down the inside of his cheek causing him to gage violently.

For the first time in years he found himself praying for the end, pleading with an unknown god that it would be over with soon, that he could rest peacefully in an everlasting world of oblivion.

Tears dribbled down his cheeks and he brushed at them fearfully, willing himself to look at his hand shaking violently to check that it was in fact water, not the red, sickeningly ooze of blood from his temple.

One shot, that's all it would have taken.

One squeeze of an already loose trigger by a delusional man quite capable of the kill.

He could hear the voices, screaming in his ears to kill him, Kill Him.

"Sir" questioned a young woman of meagre height, concern written across her face as his eyes broke open, welcoming the real world into his consciousness as he breathed in what felt like his first real intake of oxygen in days.

"I'm fine" he murmured quietly, nodding quickly to assure himself of the words being spoken. With a backwards glance he stumbled towards the door, pushing it open with great strength before escaping into the city night life, almost forgetting to leave the glass of beer on the table behind him.
