A/N:This fic came out of nowhere, although I have wondered about this question before. But, I wasn't quite expecting the answer to be this dark until the first sentence came to me. I do kind of like how this fic came out, though, so enjoy!

Cause of Death: A Flesh Wound

-

The truth was, Jane wanted to die. She didn't consciously wish for death, but that was still what drove her to step in front of the gun.

The gun went off and she felt a stinging pain in her arm, but not the nothingness that she had expected. She had thought that she was going to die, and she was in shock that she wasn't dead.

"I'm not dead, I'm not dead," was the only thought running through her head as the office exploded into activity. She didn't respond to anything, even when the ambulance came and they took her to the hospital.

She had expected to die and she was at a loss as to what to do next. It had all been so sudden, but she had resigned herself to death. What was she doing with her life anyway? Yes, she was making a difference, as small as it was, but was that enough? Was she happy with this life of hers, full of the stuffy office, crossword puzzles and romances that she only ever experienced through movies and books? Would anything ever improve in her life? Was it all worth it?

Her heart felt funny, like it was beating too fast and she was having trouble breathing. In fact, was she even breathing at all?

The mind has control over the body: one could convince oneself of anything. Someone's hair could start to fall out or someone could even appear to be pregnant all because of one thought repeated over and over again.

Jane had one thought repeating through her mind over and over again. Even though her actual wording was "I'm not dead" the actual meaning was "I should be dead." The thought was so strong that her body was listening to it.

Jane panicked as she faded away. Was this really it? A part of her embraced death, but a part of her didn't want her life to end. Jane found herself standing beside her body and she hesitated as she thought of what she could do. She could go back to her body, she knew, or she could take a step forward and move on.

She didn't know what she wanted to do. Standing outside of her body, it was all so clear, but still confusing. She wasn't happy with her life, but that didn't mean that she wanted her life to end. Uncertain, she stood there watching as the doctors tried to bring her back.

Her choice was taken from her out of nowhere, as a young, blonde, thin woman fell out of the sky and landed in her body. Jane watched as her body's eyes shot open and the doctors backed away in shock. Her body looked at the mirrored object hanging over head and the person inside freaked out. Jane watched with a smile as the person shrieked and fainted.

Jane knew then that it was okay for her to move on. Her life wasn't over, even if it had been taken over by the kind of shallow person that she couldn't stand. Jane knew things that she didn't before and she knew that this person would learn. This person would improve her life through Jane's old life and the world would go on.
