A Scary Look Alike
"I'm sorry, Joe, Kevin, I can't guarantee when Nick will wake up from his coma. He took a very nasty fall off of the stage and he's lucky to even be alive."
"Wow," Nick Lucas thought as he pushed himself into a sitting position, "I must have really taken a fall, my head is killing me!"
Nick opened his eyes and looked around. Well, he wasn't on the stage anymore. He seemed to be in a dark, narrow, cobblestoned alleyway, which was confusing because he was just onstage at the O2 theatre while performing as Marius in the 25th anniversary concert. How had he ended up in an empty alleyway?
He looked down at himself. He was still totally in costume.
Nick got to his feet and began to walk down the alleyway, hoping to find some answers. The funny thing about the alleyway was, though, that the architecture of the buildings on either side didn't seem to be modern. In fact, if had to put an approximate date on it, it almost looked like French architecture in the 1800's.
As he rounded another corner, he began to hear cries of men and gunshots. Smoke billowed up the alleyway and choked him. Was there a riot outside the concert hall or something? What was going on?
He heard footsteps approaching from behind him and he stepped into the shadow of an overhang so he wouldn't be seen by the person approaching.
The person walked by without noticing him, and he could see that the man was dressed poorly, in dirty clothes and hat.
The man looked over his shoulder in Nick's direction and with a start Nick recognized him.
"Mr. Lewis!" Nick sighed in relief and stepped out of the shadows, glad to finally see a familiar face. Norm Lewis was playing Javert in the production.
"Why, Hello, Master Marius." He greeted, patting Nick roughly on the shoulder. "I've just returned from the enemy's lines and I have quite the report to make if you'd like to come with me back to the barricade."
"Marius?" Nick repeated, but followed Norm down the alleyway anyways. They drew closer to the shouts and fighting before coming across a barricade. Men were standing upon it, gathering supplies.
The truth hit Nick like, well, a bullet. Somehow, he'd managed to end himself up in the French Revolution. And he'd landed right in the middle of the play he'd been performing.
"Men!"
The man that Nick had thought was Norm Lewis, must have actually been Javert. He called the men together.
"Men, I have just returned from enemy lines. I have overheard their plans, there will be no attack tonight. They intend to starve us out before they start a proper fight. They'll concentrate their forces and hit us from the right." Javert shared the information with the men gathered at the barricade.
Nick knew that he ought to tell them Javert was a spy, but if he knew the play, then…
"LIAR!" A small voice called from the barricade. A young boy emerged that Nick recognized as Gavroche.
Nick watched as Gavroche called Javert out as a spy. He'd put himself in a very dangerous situation. Sooner or later, someone was going to notice that there was more than one Marius.
"Marius! I thought you were going to visit Cosette! What are you doing back so early?"
Uh-oh.
To Be CONTIUNED…
