The year is 2321 as katniss everdeen wakes in her bed and looks over to see the love of her life peeta mellark. Katniss gets out of bed trying not to wake her husband, she walks into her daughters room to get her up for school. Wake up sweetheart says katniss as her daughter rue awakes, mom? says rue. Yes sweetheart? I feel sick can I not go today? Katniss puts her hand on rues forehead. You don't have a fever are you sure your sick? Rue looks across the room in a way of unease. What's wrong rue? Rue looks over to her mother. Well theres this boy. Says rue. Ohhh. Katniss laughs. Whats his name? his name is jun.. rue says in embarrassment. Katniss jolts in disbelieve. Wait jun hawthorne? Gales son? She hadn't spoken to gale in years there last conversation was just a total argument after gale had gotten in a fight with peeta. She looks at her daughter and says, so. What do you know about him? Well. Rue bites her lip. Hes really nice he likes to make me laugh and gives me flowers almost everyday. Katniss looks to her daughter and says do you love him? Rue looks to her mother and says I think its to soon to know about that.. BANG! Katniss and rue jolt as they hear a loud noise from down stairs. Rue stay here! Katniss runs down the hall way to meet peeta they both run down stairs to find no burglar but just one passed out old man lying on their floor. Oh god. Says peeta as he picks up the drunken haymitch. Haymitch regains somewhat of his consciousness and looks over to katniss. Well hello sweetheart. Says haymitch. What are you doing in my house? Katniss looks at him in disgust. This is our house haymitch! This is the 5th time you've done this! Says peeta. haymitch puts a pouting look on his face. Well im sorry I get confused easly you of all people should know that. Ugh! Says katniss .rue comes down stairs to see haymitch and sighs in relief. Oh its only haymitch she says. And as if on cue haymitch pukes all ove the carpet and falls in his own puke.
Katniss is feeling sick as she cleans up haymitchs puke off the floor. Peeta sits down and turns on the tv to see a news reporter talking about the annual 82nd hunger games peeta and katniss look up at the tv and if a cloud of gloom hovers over the room. Katniss looks over at her daughter rue. Innocent rue who has more chance that any child to be chosen for the games since not only katniss but peeta as well were in the hunger games as well. Haymitch awakes sober and looks at the tv. Oh god he says. Here we go again. Rue leaves the house to go to school. After she leaves peeta,katniss,and haymitch sit down to talk about the games. What can we do? Says peeta. Theres nothing you can do.. says haymitch it's the hunger games theres no mercy out there. All we can do is wait and pray for the best. Says peeta.
The next day is the reaping. All of district 12 gathers around in suspense to see who the tributes are this year peeta,katniss,and rue stand next to each other wanting to go home safe and sound but cannot. Peeta points out haymitch and effie to rue to ease the stress. Rue knows full well what may lie ahead for her. The chooseing is about to begin and they are about to choose the male tribute. The crowd stands waiting for the answer the mayor pulls out a piece of paper and says the name. JUN HAWTHORNE! The crowd cheers and searches for jun as katniss looks over to see him and his family and more importantly gale. With nothing but a hand over his face trying to hide his tears. END OF CHAPTER ONE.
