A/N: I own nothing. Not even a copy of the game...
Ada awoke to a bright light. Her head pulsed with pain, as did her entire right side. She was disoriented; had she ever seen this room before? She lay there trying to remember. A train car; fighting the monster that was William Birkin; then pain, and black out. There was something else... A complication, maybe?
No matter. She knew she had to get up. The job wasn't finished, and time was running out. She started to rise, but a hand on her shoulder stopped her.
"Easy. You need to rest." Ah, yes. Him. Leon Kennedy, the rookie cop. She settled back down and studied him. He was kneeling next to her, concern radiating from him like the scent of blood from his wound. Had he really carried her all the here?
"You had me worried," he admitted, a little breathlessly. "Is anything broken?"
"No, I-" Ada began, but thought the better of it. She actually didn't feel that bad. But he didn't know that. She needed to lose him if she was ever going to complete her mission.
"Leon, just go," she tried to sound pathetic. "I'll only slow you down. Save yourself."
He looked shocked at the suggestion. "No way! I'm a police officer, remember? I have to protect you. It's my job."
But the fervent look in his eyes told Ada otherwise. She knew that look well: love. Leon Kennedy was in love with her. That was the complication she had struggled to remember. She was used to men falling for her. But this time, it was different. He was different. He was brave and true; his bandaged chest was proof. And worse, he believed she was, too. That wouldn't do. Time for a new tactic.
She chose her word her words carefully. "Leon... I've only known you for a little while, but I really enjoy your company."
It was working. The young man leaned forward slightly, blue eyes softening.
"I know I'm not capable of truly caring about anyone," she went on, "but I... I don't want to lose you."
Leon placed a hand over hers. "You won't. We're getting out of this. Together."
She smiled at him, then grimaced in mock pain.
Leon glanced about her worriedly. "You stay here. I'll look for something to help ease the pain." He stood up and started for the door. "I'll be back as soon as I can."
She nodded at him wearily, and watched as he looked at her one last time before heading out the door. She waited until she couldn't hear his footsteps anymore. Then she sat up and sighed.
"I'm sorry, Leon," she said out loud. That much, at least, was true. She wasn't what he thought she was. She never could be. And that's why she slipped out of the room and into the shadows, hoping Leon would have the good sense not to come looking for her.
