MAI POV
I stared at his sleeping form, watched the slow rise and dip of his chest. My eyes focused on his face and I marvelled at how peaceful he looked. Apart from the huge scar covering half his face, one could believe he had no worries. The frown lines were gone and the mouth that was usually set in a frown were smooth and was currently drooling.
Once again I wished Zuko could could rest a little. As the ruler of a fomerly war ridden nation, this was impossible. I knew that but I was his girlfriend wasn't I? I was entitled to worry about him. Granted, it had been five years since the war and things were good. Zuko and Avatar Aang were fixing the Fire Nation. No longer were countless men sacrificed. No more dictatorship.
But there was still a lot of work to be done. The other nations still resented us because of what Zuko's father did. It was hard on the trade industry since everyone hated our guts. Also, a lot of sections of the fire nation were still being rebuilt because of the amount of Spirit energy that was released by the Avatar during his final battle with former Firelord Ozai.
My thought went to the former dictator. Now there was a real charmer. Trying to enslave the world. Almost destroying the Earth Kingdom. Not to mention burning my boyfriend's face. Yeah, I wished him a front row seat in Hell.
Zuko's eyes popped open and I smiled at him. He yawned sleepily in response. "Stop staring", he complained. I grinned.
"Not my fault you're so pretty." He rolled his eyes. This was progress.
Even though I found Zuko attractive, he felt his scar made him imperfect. Once, he even had the nerve to suggest that we break up because he didn't think himself good enough. I was furious. How dare he suggest that I didn't know what I wanted? Did he think I was still dating him out of pity?
I was itching to slap him but I looked at him and I saw that he really believed what he was saying. Even when he had everything, Zuko still thought he was undeserving. I sighed. I couldn't be furious but I also couldn't be totally sympathetic. So l decided to be both.
I kicked at his legs and sent him on his knees. Before he could be surprised, I brought one of my knives to his throat. His eyes glimmered with puzzlement- and a little fear. I kept my face blank. "Maybe I could carve out the other half of your face, you know, just to be thorough. Might not be as good as fire though.", I whispered.
"Still, I am good with knives so I could carve out , "Zuko's an idiot", on your forehead. Dont!", I hissed, letting my anger show when he tried to struggle. I dug my knife harder into his neck.
I took a deep breath. "You do not tell me who to love or adore or die for. Just because you have a scar doesn't mean you can get all noble when it suits you. The day I find you ugly, I'll tell you. Are we clear?" He blinked then nodded stiffly. I pulled him up.
He looked a little doubtful but I saw something I had never seen before. He believed me- for now. Nevertheless, today, I had gotten through and that was a victory. He took my hand and smiled uncertainly. "As long as we hold off on the face carving." I laughed and wished he could understand how many times that scarred face had earned me countless teasings from Azula.
