This is a little something I wrote on the plane. Enjoy!

Captain Chakotay

"Command— Captain. Captain Chakotay now."

"We should celebrate," He said, a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

"Computer, Champagne," Janeway ordered. She turned to Chakotay, handing him a glass. "To Captain Chakotay!"

"And to Voyager's crew!"

They toasted, neither of them able to contain their smiles.

"I never thought I'd be a Starfleet captain," Chakotay said, setting down his glass on her ready-room desk. "I honestly never thought I was good enough. On second thought, I'm probably never going to become what you have." He moved closer to her, but she remained still, hesitant.

Janeway's eyes, like pools of melted chocolate, stared up into his with a sense of longing etched into them that had been there far too long.

"I love you Kathryn."

His words were simple, yet powerful. They both knew that this was what they had always wanted, the only barrier, now abolished, had been rank.

"I love you too."

Chakotay's hand slid into the small of her back, pulling her closer. His other hand held her chin gingerly. She opened her mouth to half-heartedly protest, but it was silenced with his lips upon hers.

Kathryn could feel her champagne glass slipping out of her hand. Vaguely, she was aware of it hitting the ground and shattering into a thousand pieces. She curled her arms around his neck, leaning into the kiss. When they came up for air, she could feel his soft chuckle on her cheek.

"Finally," he breathed.

It took a second for reality to sink in. By that time, he was slipping through her fingers, no longer a solid, but a ghost, fading away.

"Chakotay!" She cried his name as he dissolved into thin air, her hands frantically grabbing for anything solid.

Chakotay's face, no more than a misty haze, stared back at Janeway, frozen in a loving smile. She watched as he disappeared before her eyes, the only evidence of his existence the champagne glasses.

Janeway sat up abruptly in bed, heart pounding in her chest. She took a deep breath and looked around her perfectly calm room that she occupied alone. It's just a dream, she told herself. Just a dream.
