Notes: This was written after I found out that the California courts had overturned Proposition 8 which bans Gay Marriage. This is my own little piece of celebration. )
Light from the TV flickered over the two men sitting, wrapped in each other's arms on the couch. Shaun sighed contentedly as his boyfriend nuzzled his neck, his breath tickling the hairs at his nape.
"Desmond, why are you being so cuddly today?" Shaun removed his glasses and placed them on the coffee table, eyes squinting in the harsh glare from the television as a commercial for some kind of cleaning product flashed across the small screen.
"I love you, that's why. I need an excuse to love on you?" Desmond smiled as he pulled back far enough to see the suspicious look on his lovers face.
"Well, it's weird. Stop it." Desmond laughed and sat up.
"Shaun… did you watch the news today?"
"No, I didn't."
"Something big happened today."
"Really? What's that?"
"You know how California had a ban on gay marriage?"
"… Did they repeal it?"
Desmond nodded, biting the inside of his cheek to keep from grinning like a fool.
"That's great, Desmond!" Shaun sat up and hugged his lover. "Now people in California can finally be happy. " A dark cloud passed over the ginger's face. Desmond tilted his head as he watched a myriad of emotions flickering across the countenance he loved so much.
"Shaun…" Desmond murmured.
"Yeah, Des? What's up?"
Desmond stood up and moved to the table in the front hallway. Shaun watched him curiously as he turned back and made his way to the couch. Desmond dropped to his knees in front of Shaun and took a deep breath.
"Shaun… I had this huge speech planned and now I can't remember a word of it. I love you. I've loved you for a very long time, even before I realized what I felt for you was what it is. I'm going to flub this, I know it." Desmond reached out and grasped Shaun's hand, his eyes pointed towards the ground. "You are the reason I'm here. You are the other half of me. My soul mate. Every breath that I take is for you. Every beat of my heart, is for you. You care for me when the Bleeding Effect takes hold. You sooth me when I have nightmares.
Desmond took a deep breath and looked up into Shaun's eyes and noticed that they were shiny with unshed tears.
"Desmond…"
"You are my light and I promise to spend the rest of my life making sure that you are cherished and loved for the rest of yours." Desmond reached into the pocket of his hoodie and pulled out a small black box.
"Ooh…" Shaun exhaled, the tears slipping down his cheeks as he watched his lover carefully open it to reveal a simple band of silver and a small tasteful diamond nestled within the metal itself.
"Shaun Hastings, will you do me the honor of marrying me?" Hope made his eyes bright as he slipped the ring onto the older man's finger.
Shaun stared down at the ring and glanced back up and Desmond. The younger man swallowed hard from nervousness.
"Oh Desmond… Yes! Yes I'll marry you!" Shaun threw himself at the young assassin and kissed him roughly. "I love you, I love you!"
Desmond laughed and returned the kiss. They pulled apart as the need for air became necessary.
"We can't do it here, you know." Desmond smiled.
Shaun's eyes twinkled with merriment. "California?"
Desmond nodded. "California."
Their lips brushed tenderly against each other, each knowing that they would love, honor, and cherish each other for as long they both lived.
