The Dog and the Wind

The dog wandered in the lands;

stepping steady and sure;

scenting for his prized prey.

There was no mistake in the heavy stench.

There was another scent;

the scent he remembered.

He knew it was her.

He came to the dying wind.

He heard her soft breath;

he heard her heartbeat.

He saw her surprise when she saw him;

he saw her eyes widen when she knew that he knew.

But one thing disturbed his mind:

Why?

Why did he come to her, instead of his prey?

What made him?

Even if he would not admit it aloud;

he thought he knew the answer.

He was at a loss.

The foul poison curled around her broken body.

There were no messengers of the netherworld.

The Sword of Heaven could not save her.

Before his eyes she faded;

The petals danced to bid her goodbye.

She looked at him, smiling.

He knew that she felt the same.

He felt her around him.

Her soul floated in the air.

The breeze blew her away.

She was free.
