Starsky & Hutch
A Matter Of Trust
(Missing Scene From Running – Hutch's POV)
"She means that much to ya..huh?"
It was more of a statement than a question. The look in Starsky's eyes told me all I needed to know. His eyes were begging me for understanding. A silent message telling me that of all people 'I' should be the one to understand it, because he had done the same for me not too long ago. A part of me couldn't believe Starsky was willing to go through this experience again, but it didn't really surprise me either. When Starsky believed in something, he jumped in it with all of his heart. That's my partner. That's Starsky.
I looked at Sharman, and my heart went out to her. I knew better than anyone how she was feeling right now. That's why I was feeling so uncomfortable. I could see too much of me in her.
Of course I had already decided I would cover for Starsky, but as his friend and a cop, it was my duty to tell him my doubts. There was no telling what Dobey was going to do when he found out that Sharman Crane was not only missing, but hiding out at Starsky's apartment.
The look we exchanged said more than words ever could. We both were remembering a time we tried so hard to forget, but who were we fooling? Not each other. It had always been there. With every drug bust Starsky would give me a questioning look, and I would nod, letting him know that it was okay.
David Starsky, an amazing man of extremes. Only he could change from a boy into a man in one second. When he was convinced that what he was doing was the right thing, there was no changing his mind. That's something I've come to admire and respect about him through the years.
I glanced at Sharman one more time.
I hope she's worth it, buddy. I hope she's worth all the time and effort you put into her.
I looked up to meet Starsky's eyes again.
Hutch, it will be okay, trust me.
Then I finally realized that Starsky knew exactly what he was doing.
I sighed with relief.
Thank you, partner.
The End
