Hermia's Diary
20th June 1595
Dear Diary,
Lysander sent me another wonderful gift today, to show how much he loves me. It was the most beautiful rose I had seen throughout my whole life, each petal was a deep shade of scarlet and ever so delicate. He even added a note saying for me to be careful not to cut myself on the thorns. That's how much he cares about me and I know that he would do absolutely anything that I ask him to do. Lysander knows I love him too.
But my father, Egeus, has arranged for me to marry Demetrius, who is is entirely opposite from my dear Lysander and is everything that I despise: rude, arrogant, careless, and dim-witted. If I continue to refuse to get married to that monster of a man then I will be killed. Maybe Lysander and I could run away and escape this madness? Maybe we will leave Athens and never and never return? Or maybe we will be caught.
We've known eachother since birth; Lysander and I. How would he cope if he lost me? And my best friend, (who is more like a sister to me) what would become of poor Helena? Then, finally, Demetrius. He would not be happy at all. Perhaps that would be a good thing though.
Demetrius or death?
Yes, I would rather die than marry Demetrius but how could I do such a thing to my friends? Oh, dear Diary, I desperately need your help!
