You're beautiful

My life is brilliant

Spike slipped through the doors to the subway just as they began to close.

That was close, he thought to himself as he sat down in an empty seat, gazing around the subway cart. The usual 5.30 crowd. He had never talked to anyone on the subway, and he had no idea who the people he rode it with every day were or what they did, but somehow he still felt like he knew them. After all, he had seen most of them every day for the past year-and-a-half.

My life is brilliant

My love is pure

I saw an angel

Of that I'm sure

She smiled at me on the subway

She was with another man

But I won't lose any sleep on that

'Cause I've got a plan

But there was a new face today. His eyes stopped on a small blonde woman who was sitting looking out the window into the black tunnel. He couldn't see her face, but he liked what he could see. Her hair reached just below her shoulders and was a beautiful golden color. She was pretty short, or at least she would have been if she had been standing up, and had all the right curves. While Spike let his eyes roam her body, she suddenly turned and looked straight at him. Their eyes met and Spike froze.

You're beautiful

You're beautiful

You're beautiful

It's true

I saw your face in a crowded place

And I don't know what to do

'Cause I'll never be with you

Some of you may know the feeling you get in the gut of your stomach when you look at someone and everything just seems to fit. Everything makes sense and you don't know how you could have lived a second without that person. That was the feeling that was cursing through Spike's body as he stared into the hazel depths of the woman's eyes. She seemed to be equally effected, because she smiled and blushed before tearing her eyes from his and turning her attention to her companion. Who Spike just now noticed.

Yeah, she caught my eye

As we walked on by

She could see from my face that I was

Flying high

And I don't think that I'll see her again

But we shared a moment that will last till the end

A man was sitting beside the woman, his left arm protectively, or possessively, around her shoulders. He said something to her and she laughed a little. The sound of her laughter seemed to be floating around the subway cart and Spike relished in it. He couldn't take his eyes off of her.

You're beautiful

You're beautiful

You're beautiful

It's true

I saw your face in a crowded place

And I don't know what to do

'Cause I'll never be with you

The next stop was his, so Spike stood up and started making his way to the exit. He had to pass the blonde woman to get there, and when he did, his hand brushed her arm slightly. The contact made her look up, and their eyes locked. The blonde woman gave Spike a smile that made his heart ache before she looked away. Spike snapped out of his trance and realized that the subway cart had stopped and that the doors were open. Quickly he made his way through the doors and onto the station. There he stopped, and didn't walk towards the escalators until the train was out of sight.

You're beautiful

You're beautiful

You're beautiful

It's true

There must be an angel with a smile on her face

When she thought up that I should be with you

When the subway train stopped in front of him and the doors opened, Spike hesitated for a moment. Would she be there? He took a deep breath and stepped into the last cart of the train. The cart was almost empty, and Spike made his way into the next cart. And the next one. Finally, when he reached the first cart, he stopped and slumped down in a seat.

She wasn't there.

But it's time to face the truth

I will never be with you
