Title: Sacrific

Rating: PG

Summary: Remus meets Sirius at the edge of time.

~~

He had made it. To the gates of heaven or hell or maybe even in between. Not knowing where he was wasn't a burden and it didn't seem like a sacrifice; he didn't care. Or maybe he did. The thoughts jumbled and the emotions twisted within him.

The trip – and the research – had been the hardest thing man had ever done. The countless hours that were wasted, spent, and savored over every book, every article. It was like a dream. A dream that he knew in his heart wouldn't come true – and yet it had. Yet, it had, because he was here. Here, looking into the eyes of the man he loved.

"Remus, Remus."

He saw his mouth moving; could read the words as they formed on his lips. Oh, those lips. How he'd missed them with every fiber of his being, every hope of his last hope.

A miracle. It was simply a miracle. He had always needed a miracle.

"Remus." Again, his name was spoken – no, whispered – but now against his forehead, his cheek, his neck.

"Sirius." It surprised him to hear the longing and hoarseness of his voice. Surprised him how much effort if took.

The tears also surprised him.

"Remus – I can't – I can't … stay." Horribly, heartbreakingly soft. "I love you, please, oh God, I love you. More then… more then you'll ever know." Whisper soft touches. Everywhere. "Take care of him… take care of you… I'll always be there. Even when you don't know it."

And then he was gone. Vanished into the mist he had submerged from.

And he hadn't had time to say anything. The words he had so wanted to say. That he had prepared over and over in his mind to say.

And it tore him apart.

He screamed after his could-be retreating form.

And that was the last time he'd ever look into those eyes again.
