Eric Coulter was never a people person. He had a few friends, but mostly stayed to himself. He was always curious as a child and never stopped asking questions. The only question his mother would never answer was who his father was.
Eric had a theory that he had transferred shortly after his mother became pregnant, it made sense. Annastasia Coulter was a kind woman who was unfortunate enough to be the step sister of Jeanine Matthews. As Eric grew Anna noticed Jeanine became more aware of him.
She worried her step sister would soon begin grooming Eric to help oversee the Erudite faction after his choosing. Anna knew Jeanine was cruel. She had no regard for human lives; Anna became sure of this when Jeanine convinced an upper level student to beat Anna unconscious at 13 years old.
At the age of 14 it became obvious Eric would resemble his father in not only looks but build as well. He was almost 5'7" tall and began to form an overall muscular tone. This worried Anna more, knowing Jeanine would attempt to turn her son into an enforcer in her plans.
When Eric was 15 Anna was killed. His aunt, Jeanine, adopted him and this would set her plan into motion. Shortly after Anna's ceremony Jeanine sat with the young boy listening as he questioned why someone would do this to his amazing mother.
"Eric, in this world there are people who are different. These people are called Divergents. They do not fall into only one faction, like us, and their brains are wired delicately. These divergents can have spontaneous outbursts and that, my boy, is why your mother is dead."
Eric looked at his aunt through his red puffy eyes, "she has no reason to lie to me," he thinks to himself. A divergent took away his mother, and he will ensure the destruction of all of these monsters.
Looking in his eyes Jeanine knows her plan has been set into motion. She sees the seed of hatred planted in him and she is overjoyed to know where this will take her in the future.
