George knelt on the floor of The Great Hall. He couldn't even speak he was so shocked. Staring into his brother's vacant blue eyes was almost like staring at his reflection in a mirror, only Fred was smiling. George had a sick, empty feeling in the pit of his stomach. Half his soul was gone. He felt a strong desire to break down and cry like the rest of his family and friends surrounding Fred's body, but no tears could come out. Merlin, why couldn't he cry? All he knew was that he had to get out of The Great Hall. He was starting to feel faint. George slowly got to his feet and walked away.
Once outside, George let the cool, late afternoon air blow in his face. The sky was grey with clouds. He didn't see anyone, but was surrounded by ruin from the battle. Where could he go? Where would there be no trace of the battle? Did the Quidditch field survive? There was only one way to find out. George ran towards it, his long legs moving him faster than he thought possible. He could see it from a distance, and was relived to see it looked alright. George kept running until he was in the center of the field. He collapsed on the ground and lay there, looking up at the sky, which was now releasing drops of rain from the grey abyss. The empty feeling in his stomach wouldn't go away. In fact, it was even worse than it was in The Great Hall. Maybe the Quidditch Field wasn't the best place to be. George was all of a sudden bombarded with memories of zooming around the field on broomsticks with Fred. He could almost see Fred flying in the sky, he could almost hear his voice calling "Come on now George, get your arse up here!" In fact, he swore he could hear someone calling his name. George sat up and turned around. It was Lee Jordan, followed by Angelina Johnson, Alicia Spinnet, Katie Bell, and Oliver Wood. George was a little overwhelmed by all the people coming his way. Hadn't he come to the Quidditch field to be alone?
"George, is that you?' Lee called to him from a way away. George didn't say anything, Lee knew it was him. His friends walked slowly, and as they came closer George saw their tear-stained faces and red eyes. Angelina was still crying. George remembered how he teased Fred when he got all mushy around her. Now he would have given anything to see his twin brother snogging her in the middle of the Gryffindor common room, to have him back and everything back the way it was. They all sat down near him on the grass. "So I guess we all had the same idea, huh?" Lee remarked as he looked around at his friends. He put his hand on George's shoulder. "I'm so sorry mate." Lee sounded as if he was about to cry.
"Why him?" George looked at all of them as he finally started to feel the pain of his loss. He could hear the anger and rising sobs in his voice. "You know, why? It should have been us together!"
"George" Alicia put her arm around him and spoke softly, as if she were comforting a small child. "We couldn't bear to lose two of our best friends. We miss Fred so much but we're so glad you're still here." She kissed him on the cheek, which was wet from rain and tears. Alicia felt his shoulders trembling, sobs now threatening to overcome him. She didn't say anything, just pulled him into her. He finally let out the grief he had been holding in since he found out what happened to Fred. George shook with loud sobs. Lee looked over at him in Alicia's arms and hugged him from behind. Angelina, Katie, and Oliver followed. They all wrapped their arms around each other, with George in the middle. Rain was pounding down on them at this point, but they all cried harder. None of them could believe what had just happened. None of them, not even Angelina, could begin to fathom the cruel hand George had just been dealt. All they could do was be there for him, like they were right now as he cried in their arms.
