Just a little ficlet for moura1371.. Happy Birthday!
"Connor, I need you to..." Abby stopped short in the doorway between the bathroom and the living area and smiled. No wonder it had been so quiet for the last half an hour whilst she'd been taking a much needed relaxing bath.
Connor was fast asleep on the sofa, his mouth slightly open meaning his breathing was almost, but not quite, a snore. The book he'd been reading was sitting precariously on his knee; any slight movement would send it crashing to the floor. Abby tiptoed towards him and carefully picked up the book and looked at it. Her smile widened and the love she already felt for her husband increased ten fold as she realised what he'd been doing.
The book was a well worn and much loved copy of Where the Wild Things are that had belonged to Connor as a child. They'd found it amongst a pile of things at his mum's house when they had started to clear it out. He'd not wanted to keep many things from his childhood, but the book had immediately been placed in the "To Keep" box without hesitation. Later, Connor told Abby that one of the few memories he had of his father was sitting on his knee and being read to. Young Connor had adored the book and it had been read to him repeatedly. "One day," Connor had said, "I'll read this to our son."
Abby stroked her swollen tummy and then leaned down to kiss Connor's forehead. He was going to become a dad any time now, and he was worried about so many things. He'd spent a lot of time practising how to put on a nappy, how to feed a baby, how to bathe it correctly and so on to the point of exhaustion. Tonight it seemed he'd been practising reading his favourite bedtime story so that he could carry on a family tradition.
She knew Connor was going to be a fantastic father.
