Session Five: Epilogue
I have always known that this was an unpredictable job; I was aware of the consequences of accepting it. So, I do my job to the best of my ability and hope the whole thing won't fall through, which of course it did. I gave up Mao's search, finally had better ventilation installed in the office and scared a lot of flunkies with my driving, yet deep down it's still not the same. The city is still gray and Spike is still dead, I think. I decided I needed a snack, knowing that yet again it was gonna be another long day trying to make a botched up job look immaculate on paper. I drove out to my favorite kabab place on a black Honda motorcycle, for some take-out. I had sold the Intrepid, earlier to a collector, seeing that a motorbike didn't get beat up as often and the syndicate could steal their own cars to trash.
I paid for my shish kababs and curry rice thinking about the family that owned the restaurant. Their daughters' son was just turning twelve and I thought about sending him the yo-yo I had in my desk, as a present. I packed away my noshies in a side compartment on the bike reminiscing about how all the guys used to come here and the lady used to bring us her special wonton soup. One of the guys wanted to find out why the wontons were so special.
Turns out that the filling was part haggis and part pickled kipper.
I smiled remembering those proverbial good old days. I was about to kick off when, for a single, solitary second, I saw something that almost made my heart jump. A ridiculously skinny figure with messy green hair appeared amidst a crowd that was passing me on the sidewalk. He kept walking as I fumbled with the ignition, feeling something being slipped into a pocket. Always being covert attunes you to that sort of thing. I looked back into the crowd but he had disappeared as such things in life are wont to happen that way. As I finally got the engine to start I slipped my hand into my pocket and pulled out a cigarette that wasn't there before. I rolled my eyes. 'Go figure,' I thought.
Somewhere Spike must still be annoying someone. Maybe.
See You, Space Cowboy!
