Birdy made him uncomfortable.
Maybe it was because it was a constant reminder of Kira. Of what he'd said – what he couldn't unsay because Kira was gone…or maybe it was because having Birdy on his shoulder was a stark reminder that Kira wouldn't be coming back.
And tat even if Kira's strength was god-like in front of them Naturals, he wasn't infallible. That he could be dead…where not even Orb could find him.
Just the Strike. A heap of broken metal. Still with Orb.
On the ship was only that box of Kira's belongings, and Birdy, and their memories.
