Remus hadn't been able to face Lily since that night, but he knew he would have to sooner or later. She was sat on the sofa, head bent over some homework, scribbling away on a piece of parchment.
He drew in his breath and walked over to her.
"Lily," he croaked.
She looked up, "Oh, Remus, hi!" She smiled. This was not what Remus was expecting.
"I need to talk to you." He stated, emphasising the second word.
"Of course. Sit down," Lily said, clearing some space on the sofa.
"About what you saw the other night-" he started.
"I'm not going to tell anyone, Remus. Why would I? It's not your fault what happened to you, and you're lovely in person. Your secrets safe with me." She grabbed his hand and smiled warmly at him.
Lily didn't mean to find him, she just wanted to know what it was Potter and Black were hiding. So she followed them down to the Whomping Willow that night, and was faced with a stag, a dog, a rat and a werewolf. She'd suspected Remus a long time ago, what with all of Severus' rambling and theories, but he was one of her best friends, and didn't fear him.
But when he went to attack her, the stag galloped towards her and swept her off her feet, riding fast away from it. Next thing she knew, she was stood in front of James Potter.
"What do you think you were doing down there? You could have been killed!" James shouted at her.
"I didn't think...I'm sorry, James." She mumbled, embarrassed, not even realising she'd called him James.
"Please Lily, don't do it again. If you got hurt..." he trailed off, still staring intently into her eyes.
"How long have you known?" Lily asked James curiously.
"Second year. We wouldn't tell anyone though, he's one of us. And if you tell anyone-" James confessed.
"Of course I won't! What do you take me for?" Lily gasped, astonished.
"I know you wouldn't, Lily, but I have to make sure you won't go and tell everyone. I mean, it's common knowledge you don't really like us marauders that much." James chuckled.
"Maybe I like you more than you think," Lily admitted, "goodnight, James." And with that, she trudged into the castle. James, feeling smug, changed back to stag form and ran back to his friends.
"Thank you, Lily," Remus smiled, shyly.
"It's no problem Remus," they stared at each other for a few seconds, contentedly. "Now, have you done the Transfiguration homework yet? I can't for the life of me figure out question 3!"
