Disclaimer: I own nothing that you could find in other Harry Potter books. All that's J. K. Rowling's, lucky girl.
A/N: Sorry this chapter is so short. The next one is longer, I promise!
Past Friendships
It had been a long, dull summer and Harry was happy to finally be heading to his sixth year at Hogwarts on the Hogwarts Express. He leaned back in the seat and sighed with pleasure.
"Hi, Harry," Ginny said as she entered the compartment. Neville followed her, along with a black-haired boy and girl.
"This is Harlin and his sister Karia," Neville said by way of a greeting.
"Hello," said Harry. Harlin nodded to acknowledge Harry's greeting.
"Hello, Harry," Karia replied, looking at him with her strange copper eyes in such a way that it seemed to Harry that she saw the very center of his soul. He shivered.
"So you're not a prefect, then?" Harry asked Ginny.
"God, no!" she said with disgust. "Then I'd have to be a good little girl. Thanks, but no. Luna's a prefect, though."
"She is? I never would've expected that."
"Expected what?" Hermione asked from the doorway, where she stood with Ron and Luna.
"Hermione?" Karia cried incredulously.
"Karia! Harlin!" Hermione squealed, giving each a hug. "It's so good to see you again!"
"Hermione, how do you know them?" Harry asked.
"We met in France while I was on holiday before third year. Oh, it's so good to see you!"
"How come she's never that glad to see us?" Neville grumbled.
Harry looked at his friend in surprise; for the first time, he realized ho deeply Neville felt about Hermione.
